We obviously have not stayed at the new one, but we have stayed many times at the older one just down the road and it is one of our favorites. We like staying right on the lake and many activities are within easy driving distance. The first time we arrived, a blue heron was waiting for us on our campsite. The state park itself is quite large and allows for good hiking, biking, and kayaking. Note that the area can be quite windy near the water at times, at least more so than many other places we have stayed.

We've stayed up to the north at St Ignace and several parks down the west coast. There's a lot to do and see further south in the Sleeping Bear Dunes area. We've also sampled numerous parks in the U.P.. Michigan state parks are well maintained and quite popular, I'd recommend reservations betrween June 10 and Sept 10, especially the weekends. There are some very good county parks operations in Michigan too. We will probably try a few more in the next couple of years, Porcupine Mountains in the U.P. calls.

If you're ever in Empire Michigan, sleeping bear dunes area, go to Joe's Friendly Tavern for lunch. Order the Surf And Turf. It's a big hamburger and a half pound of fried smelt. Tasty.
