Rapid City / Black Hills KOA

After spending a full two weeks in this KOA while waiting for repairs to our tow because of a deer strike, we want to recommend this campground. It's at the eastern edge of Rapid City on SD-44, and is one of the nicest, well-kept campgrounds we've used. The manager and staff were extremely helpful to us, especially because we could not tell how long we'd be there. It makes a great base from which to visit Mt. Rushmore, The Badlands, Black Hills, Sturgis, etc.
Power is clean, water is good, wi-fi is good.

Laura,
Yeah, 2 weeks. It happened on a Friday as we were leaving to return to CA. The repair shop ("The Collision Center", 415 Omaha St, Rapid City) actually did a great job expediting the repairs, as did AAA in appraising and approving the work. Watch out for deer: the the sheriff's deputy who was providentially behind us on the highway had hit one the day before, as had the tow driver. We saw a billboard ad on the way into Rapid City for a body shop, that featured deer hit and hail damage repairs.

When you visit, allow 5+ days to see what's around. There's a lot of history here (settlers moving west, mining, Tribal treaties made and broken), Mt. Rushmore (be sure to see the evening lighting ceremony), Wind Cave Nat.Park, Jewel Cave Nat. Mon., Badlands Nat. Park, Wildlife Loop Road (Buffalo herds, deer, Elk, deer, pronghorn antelope, deer, ...), Wall Drug in Wall, SD, Black Hills Central Railroad , ....

And be sure to visit the Journey Museum near the Rapid City KOA. Not well advertised but a fantastic little museum. Our grandsons (pre-teen) loved it.

I have a friend in Wall SD and I know she'll be thrilled when I make it back there one of these days. As long as it's not during the Sturgis rally.

thanks for all the ideas on where all to go back there.

Well think of it on the good side. You've been there done that, and that, and that, and probably will never have to visit the Black Hills again. We've been there but want to go back with our trailer someday since we tent camped last time.

Also Hot Springs, SD has a very large indoor pool; not too hot but comfortable, and the Mammoth Site is fascinating.

Another place that is fantastic if you like paleontology is the Black Hills Institute. The gift shop alone can take quite awhile to wander through.
I liked how almost every small town in the area seemed to have some sort of museum or personal collection to visit.

Oh, so true. If we had a car during that two week wait, we would have had places to go every day. Friends picked us up the day after the deer strike, and we all went to Badlands NP, then on the way back, to famous Wall Drug in Wall, SD.
Also got to visit the Geology (& Paleontology) Museum at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. We recommend putting it on your list of places to see.

Boy, you won't wanna take that trailer over any speed bumps or big dips in the road! Jeez!
