Sweetwater Summit (San Diego) reviews?

Hi, I am looking for a campground close to San Diego for a few nights in March this year. I am trying to avoid the expensive private RV parks, and parking lot style camping on the beach does not appeal to us.

Sweetwater Summit is at the top of my list. This is a San Diego county park, close to town. Here is a link to the park web page.

Sweetwater Summit Regional Park

The main issue keeping me from booking a site are the reports of ants in the campground. I expect this is a seasonal issue, likely more severe in the warm summer months.

I phoned the park hoping to find out if we would be OK staying there in March. The person I talked to admitted they had an ant problem, different from year to year, and that they had been working to improve it, but there were still some ants around, but he wouldn't give me any more than that.

Are there any Escape owners that have stayed there that want to comment on this park, or have other suggestions for camping close to San Diego in March?

Any information you can provide is appreciated!

Thanks!

We have had ant issues when camping in the San Diego area, especially at San Elijo north of SD. Some full timers showed us how to put white vinegar around the stab pads, tires and tongue to prevent them coming inside. It worked really well, so a bottle of white vinegar stays in our setup bucket if needed.
I haven’t stayed at this particular campground, so can’t speak to that location directly, but ant issues seem to be around that general area.

We'll be staying at the Santee Lakes RV, about 20 miles? E of San Diego center, in the next few weeks. Don't know of any ant problems there but now I'll be sure to bring along the white vinegar, just in case.

And if there are no ants around, you can always put the vinegar on your poutine!

I've stayed at Santee Lakes. It's a nice spot. I was there in late spring almost 2 yrs ago and there were no ants. It seemed like a well-maintained campground.

Thanks for the tip about Santee Lakes. I might give it a try. It looks nice and it's more reasonably priced than the other private parks in the area that I had looked at. I guess I gave up on private parks too soon, the others that I saw were all in the $70-100+ price range.
