Trailers and Trees

I guess this is the danger of camping where tall trees exist. Happened in San Luis Obispo (CA) during this powerful storm we've experienced. According to the news, the owners were in their trailer but no one was seriously injured. (Note: We were supposed to be camping this past weekend ... now I'm glad we cancelled.)

Not that I have any special powers of observation but after a lifetime of
tree work and making thousands of inspections on municipal street trees, I always make it a practice to
"analyze " the overall apparent condition of campground trees. Splits, dead limbs and hangers ( usually called widow makers) need to be
avoided and reported if at all possible.
It only takes minute to save a lifetime of heartache.

Very good advice and something to remember.

Wow! That is terrible. Not even our tough moulded fibreglass trailers could survive that.

That actually happened in Santa Margarita, not far from SLO. The owner said all he owned was in it and is starting "from square one". We've noticed recently at campgrounds that many there are not just camping.

In Monterey a week ago at Veterans Park a sign outside said something like "High incidence of tree failure- enter at your own risk". The drought has severely weakened a lot of trees.

Yikes! Lots of fallen trees around here too many of them century old oaks. Clearly the combination of drought then so much rain and wind are bad news. My niece lost a redwood tree and those have tap roots! Fortunately it missed the house.

A number of Oregon State Parks close particular loops in the parks during the winter time. Mainly because of limbs and entire trees coming down during high wind events. Glad the couple weren't hurt! Trailers can be replaced, people... never.
