I assume that you mean you use it only for towing the Escape - for which you need the weight-distribution feature - and don't use it to tow other trailers without WD so it doesn't matter if it works without the triangular plate. That makes sense to me.

Actually I like the Andersen hitch. It is relatively easy to use and provides a stable towing experience. I probably have about 15,000 miles on the hitch so I'll see if I have to replace the cone every 15k...
Still waiting for the part.

Dave

PS Thanks Tim, we had a great trip - missed the Fall NOG though.

We have the second Andersen hitch that Escape installed. It does not have a snap ring, but it did come with a steel collar that mounts below the hitch, just like the yoke does. They told us that if we tow something other than our Escape (without the yoke attached), the collar will prevent the ball from coming up out of the aluminum housing. I guess this is a reasonable concern with a lightly loaded tongue, rough road, etc. Shortly thereafter, they switched to the groove and snap ring. We have also had an instance of the red sleeve migrating down into the aluminum housing. Andersen sent us a new one, and there have been no further problems. I'm still happy with the Andersen, but I won't try to convince anyone that it's vastly superior to a conventional WDH. Just different, lighter, and maybe easier to work with.

Yes, and it is actually a requirement for any hitch. Both the old VESC V-5 standard and the current SAE J684 require that the hitch system (and so the ball) withstand the same force pulling upward as pushing downward.

Have you towed across Wyoming?
