Ours are not. 2) German autos must pass a far more stringent annual safety inspection than any in the US. All of their autos, not just ones from certain states. Imagine telling an American that their car can’t be driven until fixed properly because they had body work done with Bondo to repair damage that was larger in size than a quarter. Because it’s more likely to disintegrate if you’re driving 160 mph. 3) As previously discussed, Germans are better drivers, because they are required to be. Driving school is mandatory, lengthy, expensive, and not a guaranty of passing the actual test. Part of it is how to drive at speeds well over 100mph. The physical dynamics are different, and Americans don’t know any of this, unless they have taken lessons at a race track. And there is no way that we are going to institute a similarly high standard of driver competence, and take driving privileges away from those who can’t pass. No way. 4) Autobahns are maintained to a far higher standard than our highways. Think “smooth like glass”. A little irregularity that isn’t a problem at 70mph can be a serious problem at double that speed. They rip up and replace roadways that we would consider to be good to go. Our highways feel like third world constructions in many places in comparison. Neither are our highways themselves laid out for such speeds (curves, on and off ramp lengths, etc).

As much as I love the efficiency of the autobahns, US drivers, US cars, and US highway structures can’t do it, without some serious, expensive, inconvenient changes.

Hey, if we can do high-speed rail, we can anything! Oh, wait . . . we're not doing that either.

I think the U.S. interstate highway system was designed for travel at 85 mph.

How’s that California high speed rail program coming? Is there adequate funding? A little railroad outfit here in Iowa proudly announced a few years ago that all their trackage would now handle 25 mph speeds after an upgrade. It’s all relative

Speaking of high-speed driving, here are the fastest speeding tickets in Texas for last year. Note the 150 mph F-150. Yep.

I wonder if that F-150 was a Raptor...

What’s the tow capacity of a Raptor again?

Have to wonder about a truck ( Raptor ) with a box that appears designed around the ability to carry it's own spare tire, and nothing else.

You have to endure a couple ads to get to the meat, but here's an excerpt from Top Gear:

It’s where American obsession with muscle cars meets their obsession with trucks. It’s brilliant. Nobody said it’s practical. Is a Corvette practical? How many grocery bags does that hold? Does it have a spare tire? Even a donut sized one? [emoji507]

Raptor, for the win!

Sure, but that's not a Ford Raptor, it's Hennessey's idiotic modification of a Raptor for people with too much money and no need for a truck. A stock Raptor has the same box as any other F-150.

You Made Me Do It

I checked my oil because of this thread. Should have done it anyway, but never seemed to get around to it. Sort of scared me to think of pulling my E19 and having low oil. Had bad dreams of screaming engines shutting down on the interstate with smoke and fire and wife blaming me....nah. But, thanks for the reminder.

Yea but here’s a studley old guy who used his ”Vette” to pick up a good looking woman to go to the store for two boxes of Jello pudding mix.

I don't know how to respond to your comment without either insulting you and/or your spouse. And, it's not the spelling errors.

I remember driving like the wind, rather riding like the wind on my Harley at Sturgis in late 90's when pulled over by a pick up truck with a blue light. The policeman, rather national park police asked me my speed, I responded with a smirk, saying 85, why, there is no limit out here. He said you are wrong, you are in the National Park and the speed limit is 35! I felt this blood rush to my head. He gave me a ticket and said, I have good news and bad news, the fine is $250 which is the bad news, the good news is you are on federal property and this ticket will not show on your state license .I gave him my credit card....... Lesson learned.

Good! Then I'm glad I started the thread. So it will count as my good deed for 2019.

(Glad to get that out of the way.)
