Frozen Anti-Freeze??
I went to visit the trailer today, and pull the batteries out for the winter. While I was putzing around, I noticed that the anti-freeze I had left in the toilet bowl (maybe ˝-1 cup?) was frozen solid. luckily I did the winterizing by blowing out the lines with compressed air, and then pouring antifreeze down the drains and into the gray and black water tanks. So I don't think the water lines will freeze, and if the trap under the sink freezes, I think I could replace it fairly easily.
But I was very surprised to see the pink stuff frozen. I thought it would remain liquid until -50 like it says on the bottle. I didn't dilute the stuff. Do you think I could have gotten a bad batch? How worried should I be?
The temperature here this morning was about 10 degrees fahrenheit.
Thanks much.

I have never seen frozen rv antifreeze, like the label says -50 is the freeze point. Do not know what you are using but I'd go get another type and pour down the drains, before tonite.

Jim,
I used the CAMCO "full timer's choice" -50 antifreeze. Got it from Camper's World in October. I have spent the last hour googling RV Antifreeze and learning what I can learn about it. According to This Post RV antifreeze freezes but doesn't expand. There are a couple of other posts that differentiate the "freeze point" from the "burst point" and indicate that it isn't uncommon to have frozen pink stuff at 10 degrees. There are some other posts that talk about ice crystals starting to form at 10 degrees, and freezing solid at -10, but apparently it contracts until it hits -50. I also sent an inquiry to CAMCO and we will see what they have to say.
The good news is that it is somewhat warmer today (31!) with a forecast low tonight of 25. I may go to Homeless Depot and buy a jug of the DOW antifreeze they sell and add it to the traps.

Interesting Leon. Sounds like any propylene glycol RV antifreeze is going to do the same thing, so maybe the DOW will look the same -- be interesting to hear if you find any difference.

I have found some similar posts about the Dow Antifreeze too. So your are right, Eric, sound like it is common to all the propylene glycol antifreezes. I will let you know what the CAMCO folks have to say for themselves.
I am not ready for this winter stuff yet. It is only November and Lindy and I are already getting itchy feet. So today I sent a note off to the campground in Osoyoos to make reservations for the rally.

The anti-freeze for anti-freeze
I understand that the anti-freeze for anti-freeze is water!!
Anti-freeze by itself will freeze.
"Thom Wigle of Dow Chemical in Ontario informs me that his office receives several hundred complaints each winter from irate customers complaining that their antifreeze is "no damned good." A typical story is that the customer was using a Dow product undiluted and their engine froze up at around zero.
"Actually, this is to be expected when one considers that ethylene glycol, the principal component of most antifreezes, freezes at 8 degrees above zero, Fahrenheit. It is only when water is added that the freezing point is depressed. The freezing point of an ethylene glycol and water mixture drops rapidly as the concentration of glycol is increased to a mixture of about 60% antifreeze and 40% water. Around that point, an abrupt turnabout occurs, and as more antifreeze is added, the freezing point rises almost as fast as it had previously dropped.
"It's clearly a case of what you don't know can hurt you, but I have never seen an antifreeze container with an explanatory note to this effect."

Yes you are correct. As for anti-freeze in a auto radiator % 20 water is req. to stop it freezing. So maybe it goes for Rv anti-freeze as well.
Good suggestion.

Know what you are buying
There may be some anti-freezes that are pre-mixed intended to be used right out of the bottle.
There may be other brands that are full strength and require the user to mix to the proper concentration with water.
Read the label.

Little anecdote about Nippy City,
Back in late 60's I was assigned to Alameda NAS in California. I drove across the country in my 66 mustang with both of my parents, 3 naive people who had never left the east coast, my mom squeezed in back seat and dad riding shotgun. We had a scenic 6 day trip (stopped at St Louis arch, Grand Canyon, painted desert), and arrived in Hollywood to stop on our trip north. Three city bumpkins we were, we all ran to look at the Pacific Ocean. When we checked into our motel I saw a marque with "Joey Bishop and Frankie Sinatra, tonite at 8 pm". We could not wait. My mom loved Mr. Sinatra and my dad thought Joey Bishop was the funniest comedian.
Upon arrival we were seated and then the lights go dim. Both Joey and Frankie were burlesque performers with tassels spinning in the black light. Needless to say we did not stay for the second performance. We did see John Wayne's size 7 boot in the star studded sidewalk!!
