Re: Generator for Escape
Well went to Yamaha today and tried the 2400 watt model....
bad news it won't run the air conditioner on the Escape 19.
Plan B, the neighbour came over with his Campion 3000/3500
from costco.ca for $419.00 (delivered) and it ran the A/C no problem.
Time to have a beer and a think on this one.

Re: Generator for Escape
Hi Doug,
It's surprising that the Yamaha didn't run the A/C. Spec is 1500 watts - well within the Yamaha output. Did the generator not have enough power to get ithe Carrier started? Was the battery charging system on and trying to draw lot's of juice?
I wonder if the charging system can be turned off while running the A/C. Any thoughts from the experts?

Hi Edgar
Yes it was the start up draw, I talked to a tech at Carrier
he said you should have 3000 watts or larger.
So today I'm off to look at more generators....

Re: Generator for Escape
Hmmm talk about crazy timing.. We just tried the Yamaha 2400 yesterday on the dometic penguin 13,500 BTU it worked, but you have to put the Fridge on propane (not auto).. It definitely fired up and ran the AC..

Re: Generator for Escape
anyone know if escape will allow you to have a new trailer with a coleman polar cub roof a/c? THis would easily allow a Honda EU2000 generator to be used.
Second, when you use a generator, where do you plug it into on an escape? The shore power cord? would this then give you Both AC and DC electricity inside the trailer through the converter? Thanks in advance.

Question #1 is an "ask Rease and Tammy", they're very accomodating.
Question #2: Yep, plug your shore power cord into the generator, and the trailer doesn't know any better... all AC/DC plugs work (as long as you don't run more than the generator can produce). More than likely, you'll just need an adapter from 30AMP to your typical 3 prong 110.

Re: Generator for Escape
When I finally end up putting an AC unit on my trailer, at this time I plan to go with the Coleman Polar Cub too. It would likely be all I will ever need. Even on the days that have gotten quite hot on the trip we are now on, the inside of the trailer has not got too hot at all, nothing the fan could not handle.
There are start up capacitors that aid most units in dealing with the high draw when starting. I have heard they work great, but have not really looked in to them much yet.

Re: Generator for Escape
Update on generator:
We just got the Yamaha2400is and will be testing it out next week in Tahoe.. We purchased from Cabelas and it arrived in 5 days regular shipping.. It's a tad heavy @ 70 lbs, but one person can handle it.. I put gas & oil in it and it fired up on the first pull.. really quiet and will power our A/C (dometic peguin 13.5 BTU).. A tad overkill for the Microwave and regular power, but we thought we would use it as a home back-up system just in case of power outage/earthquake (live 5 mi from SF)

Re: Generator for Escape
Heh Jeff, I'll be following your results. I have a Duo-therm HP (High Performance, not heat pump) 13,500 on Hokie. The reason I went with the HP rather than Penguin, or the Coleman that Escape uses, is that it pulls 10.3 amps rather than 15.5. So, hopefully, if the 2400 works for you, it should work for me. Not looking for a generator right now, but when I do, I'd like to have the 2400 with dual fuel, so I can use the propane already available on the camper rather than carrying gasoline (smelly stuff!!!!!!!).
Have you gotten your Bambi yet?

Re: Generator for Escape
Yep.. we taken out several times.. that's why we opted for the Yamaha 2400is.. so that it will run the A/C..

Re: Generator for Escape
Interesting article on generators from RV Travel (an online RV magazine - which is free): http://www.newrver.com/publish/RV-generators.shtml

Re: Generator for Escape
Related article, since the generator is there to charge the battery. May not be of common knowledge to all, so enjoy.

Re: Update on Yamaha 2400is Generator
I forgot to post the update.. We went up to Lake Tahoe for a couple of days (elevation 6200) and tried the Yamaha generator.. I think it may be a tad louder than the Honda2000. but it's hard to tell since it was located right next to the trailer and all the other generators that we're running we just kind-of walked past from the road.. The spec's say they are pretty much the same..
It definitely is overkill if you are not interested in running a A/C unit.. The unit is around 70 lbs.. one person can move it, but two makes it much easier to get off/on the truck.. If you're just interested in using Microwave, toaster and stuff like that I wouldn't get it..
The good news is we fired up the A/C it just kicked right in.. I had my worries about the elevation and possible loss of power as I read on different forums that it may not work as well in higher altitudes, but ours did.. so we're keeping it ..

Re: Generator for Escape
I'd like to be somewhere where A/C was required at 6,000 feet.

Re: Generator for Escape
I much prefer being where A/C is not needed at all. At least venturing away from the trailer would be bearable.
I know many love the hot, but it just makes me melt. I can only handle temps over 80F if I have a cocktail in hand, and hanging around some water.

Re: Generator for Escape
I totally agree.. but the reason we got a generator is really not for us, but for our dog.. yes we are very crazy.. Shiba is 15 (black fur & lots of it..) and the reason we got the a generator is so we could leave her in the trailer while we are out exploring in the hot weather.. yes we're nuts.. she gets the A/C we get the heat & humidity.. anyway we didn't need the A/C in Tahoe, but was a great test for it.. (I think my wife's hair dryer made the thing work the hardest!!)

Re: Generator for Escape
Have to admit I lied. I'm out in the back yard, sitting in the shade and wishing there was a breeze. I didn't go for air though. I have no plans to sit in the desert, inside a trailer, to stay cool.

Re: Generator for Escape
Sometimes when we stop while traveling, I wish we had A/C in the trailer for our dog too, but there would be no way to plug it in. We opt to leave him in the car, and just use the remote start to get the car running with the A/C on, at least nobody can steal it then with no key in the ignition. With the doubled insulation and the thermal windows in our trailer, it is almost always cooler in there then outside.
Some day though, when our travels take us south, I will need to get A/C and dependent upon the sites we stay at, quite possibly a genset too. This is why I like to keep gathering others opinions on them.
