New tires

Had a puncture flat this weekend and took BlackJack in for 2 new tires and ended with 4 new ones as a "safety measure". Although one one flat, it is always recommended to replace both tires on the same axle, this I knew 2 new ones were in store. But the originals were approaching 3 years on age which is 50% so I opted for 4 new ones which hopefully be good for another 5 years.

Why would this be, on an axle where the wheels turn independently? I could see on a drive axle, where a difference in diameter might affect the drive train a bit.

Since one tire would be new and the other used, different treads, different circumferences, all could lead to change in stability.

I guess you should never rotate your tires then, as one will always have less wear than the others?

I am thinking you might have had a salesman who hadn't made his quota yet, Jim.

I find it real hard to believe that stability of the trailer would be affected. Am I missing something?

You could have rotated the spare on, and used the new one as the spare.

My tires were made in early 2013, so in 6 months they would have been 3 years, for $200 more I'll have all new and good for another 5 years versus having to replace 2 tires in 2 years, plus it is a selling plus if I do decide to get that 5.0, new tires and bearings repacked, just like new.......

I was told the same thing as Jim in that you should change both tires on a tandem axle trailer. Both tires need to be identical IE Same Mfg -same size -same tread depth -same inflation pressure. Jim's concern with safety over cost is laudable in my book

This was my first flat in over 40 years and I do not want to repeat it, if possible. One thing to happen in your home town, but on the road with 2 dogs, not a pleasant scene.

I believe the saying goes replace both tires on the same side, not the same axle.

This is from Discount tires website.

If a tire fails on a tandem axle trailer, you should replace both tires on that side. The remaining tire is likely to have been subjected to excessive loading.

another reason to replace all 4......to prevent you from going in circles with 2 new and 2 old tires on opposite sides of the trailer.......

Good article, it also states 3-5 years and 5-10,000 miles replacement time/mileage, both of which I will have exceeded real soon.

Now that does make some sense to me, especially if you towed a long ways on just one tire.

If anyone wonders why some of us think that either "Special Trailer" tires are the worst pieces of round rubber crap ever sold for use on the road , or trailer tires sellers are the greediest businesses around, read this from that article (the source of Jim's comment, above):

I guess you do get what you pay for, the 4 new tires will cost around $300, about what one new tire will be on the Ram with 20" wheels/tires.....
