Questions for service tech on Dometic 6.7 fridge?

On Friday 2/27 I am taking my Escape 21 to Camping World to have the annual service done on its Dometic 6.7 cu. ft. refrigerator. Given that this model fridge has had some issues, what should I ask/tell the service tech? My unit has the fridge vent on the trailer roof.

thanks,

What is the annual service requirement? First time I heard of this.

It's a warranty thing; if you want the free one year extension to your basic one year you have to have it serviced before the first anniversary.

I bought the extended policy, I think. The paper work is in the trailer under snow.

All Escape stuff comes w/2 year warranty however my understanding reading the Dometic paperwork is that you need to get it serviced within 12 months for the second year coverage to be in effect.

Ask him why Dometic insists on selling SN climate rated fridges in North America while they sell T rated fridges in Australia.....wait.....nevermind, the tech doesn't work for Dometic.

Haven't had my fridge serviced in six years. Guess I should read the manual.

I did nave to service my own, and replace the thermostat a few years back. Fixed it good, I did.

Kinda curious as to what they would do for service work at one year. There is nothing really to service. Unless something goes wrong, then it just needs to be fixed.

Its more like they can't fix them so they service (whatever that means) them instead

So I took the trailer to Camping World today, and here's what they did to the fridge, according to their checklist:

- Refrigerator is vapor tight to the interior of the RV: Y
- Refrigerator is properly installed/baffled/vented: Y
- Clean and adjust burner, flue, and orifice assembly: Y
- Clean/check all terminal connections: Y
- Clean/inspect all ground connections: Y
- Inspect and test door seals: Y
- Check for proper LP pressure and adjust as needed: Y
- Power ventilator installed: N (I'm guessing this is the "Texas fan"?)
- Gas safety shutdown in 45 seconds: Y

This procedure took about an hour or so; total cost was $100.53.

I talked to the technician after the work was done, and told him there had been concerns about this particular model fridge. I haven't camped in hot weather yet, so I'm not sure how it will behave then. He replied that I shouldn't have problems because it is well-insulated and is vented through the roof. He had noticed problems with this model fridge vented through the side of the RV.

The man also said that if I have problems I can have a fan installed. There are two types: one has a switch that can be routed to the inside so I can turn it on and off, and the other has a thermistor or some kind of automatic switch. Installing the second type requires pulling the fridge from its mounting.

So what he said largely seems to agree with what I've read in forum threads here about the Dometic 6.7 refrigerator. I'll keep an eye on mine to see how it behaves, and install a fan if needed.

$100.53 for a "free" one year extension on the warranty. What's wrong with this picture?

I guess knowing the propane pressure was correct is worthwhile because that can have an impact on cooling.

Yah, I raised this issue when I first saw it in my owner's manual. Having to pay 100 bucks to get a "free" warranty extension is BS. Too bad there isn't stronger consumer legislation to cover items like this. Free should mean free.

maybe it should read, "Take it in for a yearly checkup and we will extend the warranty at no additional cost other than the checkup"

Agree, that makes sense, and forget about free. Free doesn't exist.

I would have to say chalk up the 100 dollars to peace of mind knowing that everything is OK. Loren

Hi: cpaharley2008... We bought the extended warr. (insurance)... Does that mean we have to pay again & again for the coverage?
Another question would be: Why should we have to fiddle with the fridges to make them work properly then pay again for the frey warranty!!! Alf

Yes, but only if you want to "extend" it again when the warranty runs out.

In most cases, the fridges DO work properly, for the climate in which they are designed, which for the 4.3 and the 6.7 is "sub-normal". If it can't hold temps below 40F in those climates, Dometic is obligated to repair or replace. Otherwise, they are not.
