Upholstery Cleaning

Has anyone unzipped and removed the stock cushion fabric and taken it to the dry cleaners? If so how did it come out? Did it shrink, fade, or otherwise become unusable? Any ill effects to the vinyl on the underside? And even more daring...has anyone had the nerve to try washing it?
Thanks!

The first night I had my Escape and was "toasting" it, I spilled my drink all over the dinette cushion (user error as I didn't have the drop-down extension locked in place). I took out the cushion and sprayed it down in my bathtub (cushion and all). No stains from the orange juice, no ill effects.

While this doesn't speak to the Escape upholstery, I had an infestation of mice in my previous pop-up trailer. I took all the upholstery off the foam (which I had to replace at great expense) and washed it all three times (machine wash, air dry) with a lot of bleach figuring I had nothing to lose. Again, no shrinkage, no ill effects.

I have washed the cushion covers in our 2008 Escape 5.0 on "delicate" in the washing machine and then air dried outside. It worked great.
The big cushions came off and reinserted easily because they had the zipper on 3 sides, the small ones needed the old garbage bag trick to reinsert to make sure they slid in and fit the corners nicely.
No ill effects to the vinyl - or the material!

Christine, what is the "old garbage bag trick" that you mention?

Hi Karen:
Wrap the foam in a garbage bag so that it slides into the cushion cover - otherwise the foam doesn't slide and it's a bugger to get it to fit properly. Make sure the open end of the garbage bag is at the side opposite the zipper.
Once you're happy with the fit, simply slide the garbage bag out, zip it up, et voila!

No problem! I found that out when I thought I'd make new cushions for the 5.0 because people kept telling me you couldn't take the covers off because you'd never get them back on again.
The instructions for the new cushions suggested using a garbage bag, so I took a chance on washing the covers and it worked like a charm!
Just as well.... I'm a lousy seamstress

Thanks so much for sharing! That's going to come in handy one day. I love this forum! I have learned so much and I haven't even taken the first trip in my trailer yet

How to replace cushion covers:

You can use a regular home carpet vacuum instead of a shop vac - works like a charm. Any plastic works as well. the best I've found is the super cheap disposable drop cloth plastic - the thinner the better. Garbage bags work too but are tougher to pull out.

Note - if you keep the open end of the plastic on the zipper side you can often give one quick hard pull before the foam re inflates and the whole piece slips right out.

Wow! I can't believe I got to become an Escape owner without having to take an IQ test! You guys are SMART! Thanks a million! Looking forward to meeting some of you at the Oregon Fiberglass Gathering next week. I'll have freshly cleaned cushions!

Took a gamble and threw the cushion covers in to the laundry machine. These have the vinyl backing, but did ok in the machine.

Other than some very slight bunching of material, the cushions look great (and clean). Did not need the garbage bag trick, as the foam went in fine with some careful squeezing.

Thanks!
I took the cushions to a carpet place and they steam-cleaned them. I also steam-cleaned them myself as we have a little home steam cleaner. Doubt one costs much and you can use it then any time.

I threw mine in the washing machine a year or so ago and they went back on fine-(and mine are old!) Even the dryer on low for a short while--and that is with the vinyl backing...

How do you wash the back cushion (the one with the wood backing) on a u shaped dinette? It is stapled on.
