Second that. Don't carry firewood inside the trailer unless you want the risk of bugs.

There is a huge sign on the border of BC and Alberta forbidding transporting of firewood.

There are huge signs everywhere these days about transporting firewood across state lines or into parks.

With some of the creatures in firewood I definitely would not put it in the trainer and sleep with them and would leave them outside.

Now back to the 2017's. Lets see more pictures.

This will likely raise the hackles of current owners, but with all the improvements being made to the 2017 models, perhaps all pre-2017 models should simply be referred to as "Beta test" models making the 2017's the true Gen1's.

dirty stuff kept outside

Last month I was digging down into our front box and discovered a brown or Arizona recluse spider, glad it was outside and not under the bed as I have a small spot from a previous bite on my belly.

Cool!

We can be at the forefront of a new trend, thanks to Brian B-P for suggesting it. Alas, he'll have to purchase a new trailer to join our cool group.

Hard Data

At least one person has asked and more are probably curious about the heights on the 2nd Gen 19'. Height from the ground to the top of:
-Air Conditioner 108" (2.74m)
-Jack Antenna 105" (2.67m)
-MaxxAir Vent 102" (2.59m) WHEN CLOSED. Taller when open.
-Fiberglass Roof 96" (2.44m)
Disclaimer: trailer was level, partially loaded with supplies and had full tank of water. I was on the roof, so it may have squatted a bit more. Temperature, wind velocity, and who knows what else might affect the dimensions. Measurements were taken an instrument (builders level) which is very accurate, but your conditions might vary. Real world conditions can be affected by specifics to your situation such as the height of the tow vehicle hitch, dips, bumps, and angles on the road that can tip the trailer up and down, and how the trailer is loaded. Balance a pencil across a fulcrum, move one end up and down and watch the corresponding reaction on the other end of the pencil. The height of a trailer is never static. BTW the height of the Air Conditioner is exactly the same as on my former 2014 -19 (1st Gen). .....and the fact that the sign at the Golden Arches says that the overhead obstruction is at 2.8 meters means diddly squat. That's not what caused the demise of my trailer but it did leave a little bit of that special golden colour across the top. I have a check list when I travel that includes the height of the trailer among other things. It comes in handy sometimes.

Dave

Since you are talking heights and hitting things any concerns about the Jack antenna? I see in your measurements it is a couple inches lower than the A/C but was wondering if its location could be a problem. So it's 9" tall? Is there any breakaway feature on it or is it rigid? Can you tell how it's mounted? I would also love to see some more pictures of it and of your fridge closed and open showing the whole thing in the cabinet.

Thanks

You can call your trailer whatever you wish. Ten Forward is a classic and a classic it will stay.

Hi: Donna D... That's a "Class act". We have a 5.0TA Mk.I. It's surprising how many changes the TA's have evolved through since inception. Our preconstruction order questions were left in the capable hands of Reace to figure out but we did have some "Long distance" input into how the TA's interior was configured. Alf

As Alf points out, the new molds are the latest in the long string of improvements Reace has implemented over the years.

Donna - Ten Forward is truly a Classic!

Next bit of data is the weight. GVWR is shown as 5000 lbs and the Permitted Cargo weight as 1335 lbs. The label indicates that the permitted cargo of 1335 lbs does not include the fresh water tank and hot water tank which when full, weigh in at 339 lbs. That would make the dry weight of the trailer 3326 lbs (5000-1335-339=3326) I don't really care all that much (5.7 Hemi) but it seems all the little extras (dual glazing, double batteries, AC, larger fridge) really add up. I think my 2014 Classic had a GVWR of 4500 lbs, so it seems they have beefed up the frame. That's probably part of the weight.

The standard Cargo Carrying Capacity was calculated with an allowance for full fresh water and water heater, but I'm not sure that the current "does not include" wording means the same thing. You could have only 1000 pounds of cargo capacity with full tanks and a 5000 - 1335 = 3665 pound dry weight... although that sounds really heavy. A 3665 pound dry weight would indicate a thousand pounds of options and new-generation weight gain, compared to the first-generation dry and empty weight of about 2610 pounds.

I think the original 19' GVWR was 4000 pounds, and that's what the published spec still says. I don't know if there was any strengthening of the frame (or that it would be needed); the design change to change GVWR may be entirely an adjustment of the axle ratings. They were rated at 2500 pounds each (and because they're Torflex the GVWR must be substantially less than the total of the axle ratings), and could now be higher. They can be ordered in 100 pound increments, up to the 3500 pound limit of the #10 model of Torflex, and should be at least 3000 pounds each for a 5000 pound GVWR.

Brian, maybe you can decipher the label. I agree the weight gain seems a little bit much and maybe there was just an axle change.

Thanks for the placard image

Good news
Escape is using the older - and better - cargo capacity rating method
GVWR: 2272 kg (5009 lb)
Cargo Carrying Capacity: 607 kg (1338 lb)
... "calculated with the fresh water tanks full", so that cargo capacity is in addition to the water weight of 154 kg (340 lb) Current industry practices allow RV manufacturers to state just a total capacity, and the water (or waste) cut into that, but Escape is following this more realistic and complete calculation.
In this case, I agree with Dave's calculation of dry emtpy weight (as equipped), now that I see what the label says:
2272 kg GVWR - 607 kg CCC - 154 kg water = 1511 kg (or 3331 pounds)

That's 3331 - 2610 = 721 pounds of options and design change weight gain, versus the previous-generation spec.

Not So Good News
GAWR: 1136 kg (2504 lb) each (almost certainly should have read 1134 kg, because that's 2500 pounds)
That's not enough. Torflex axles in tandem use are not to be loaded assuming an equal distribution of load, because they don't load-share; a substantial allowance is supposed to be made for this, and until now Escape has done that:
  • 2x2500 lb (1134 kg) GAWR and 4000 lb (1814 kg) GVWR for the 19'
  • 2x3000 lb (1362 kg) GAWR and 4600 lb (2087) GVWR for the 21'
Either the GVWR was raised to a level not appropriate for the suspension (axles), or the suspension was changed but the placard doesn't show the updated GAWR.
