Our New 5.0 is Coming To Vancouver Island March 2013

Hello All

Ellen and I have decided to change our approach to escaping by exchanging our 2005 17B for a 2013 5.0. This summer we were on a 3 week camping vacation and regularly discussed what our dream Escape would be. Ellen was trumpeting the virtues of the 5.0 and I would counter with the 19. At a state park we came across some other escapers who had the 5.0 and my argument began to lose steam. As has been debated on this forum before, we went with the 5.0 for the separate bedroom, the dinnete to the rear to take advantage of the view and add more food prep space beside the counter. I am a little wary about losing the truck box for more storage, but maybe this will force us to bring less stuff on the road.

We still have some time to decide on options

These are some of our choices so for:

Thermal Windows & Double Insulation Dual Water Heater
LED Interior Light Pkg Dual 6V Batteries
Additional Window Over Sink 6.3 CuFt Fridge
2 or 3 Burner SS Stove and Rangehood SS Sink & Chrome Faucet
Bike Rack Ready Removable Power Cord

Options we are still deciding on:

2 - 12V Heat Pads w Spray Foam Insulation SS Stove Cover
95W Solar Panel w Charger Aluminum Rims
Exterior Propane Quick Connect Exterior LED Lights
LED Captains Reading Lights Surge Protector

I am sure there will be more to think about

Cheers Brett

I was talking to Tammy a couple of weeks ago and she mentioned that you and Ellen had sprung for the 5.0. Congratulations!! ...... it didn't take you long to make up your mind after seeing it in the flesh ...... you're going to love it.

I see the solar panel is on your maybe list; we love having the panel as we never have to worry about power, even in poor weather.

Barry

Reace convinced me to drop the 12v pads but keep the foam insulation. Otherwise we ordered almost all of the available options other than TV and stereo. Just seemed wrong...

In hind sight I would not bother with the heat pads on the tanks but would get the spray foam, I Just don't think for our needs the heat mats are needed. The again depending on how you like to camp the solar panel is a must for us.

The spray foam insulation without the heat pads is an intriguing idea.

I have a portable 60W solar panel I got from Canadian Tire last spring. I didn't use it much this summer so I don't have much to go osn. If I don't choose the solar panel from escape I think I will get the trailer pre wired for installation later as I think simpler is better. Not having to carry another item on the road will be good too.

Although I think the solar panel on the roof is a great idea, if you opt to not get it I think its a great idea to have the trailer prewired for it down the road. we already had a solar panel that i took off our previous trailer so they pre wired our trailer and installed our panel when we picked up the trailer. The charge to prewire it was very reasonable.

Hi Islandr. Interesting to read your decision and what works for each of us and our camping habits. We have (had) a 17B and for a number of reasons got twofootitus. 5 week camping trip thru southern California and Arizona this year. Much debate. Opted for the 19. The 5.0 won't work for us as we carry both kayaks and bikes in the truck. Having had a 17, makes it easier to decide on options. We've ordered:
extra insulation and thermal windows - has kept us cool in the desert and warm in fall camping, plus those windows block out campground noise
heat pads and spray foam insulation - didn't have this in the 17 and the floors were cold in fall/winter, and while I'm not sure about using the heat pads, after the foam is sprayed seems like they would be rather difficult to add
solar panel - in six years of extensive camping, we've plugged in twice and I'm always watching the batteries
dual batteries
led interior light package
additional window over sink
larger fridge
storage box
stereo - I'm supplying, Escape is installing
TV antennae and power amplifier - I really don't contemplate using it now, but would like it there perhaps for future use
2 captains reading lights in the dinette
and I just added the aluminum rims as we live in the rain on Vancouver Island same as you and everything rusts!
I'll be looking for a new 5.0 when we're camping on the Island!

Very similar to our 19 which was started yesterday. We dropped the heat pads but kept the insulation as we won't plug in enough to warrant the pads.
Added 2 extra extension tables as well.
TV antenna - look at the Eglato USB TV tuner for your laptop. Includes recording software. For music why not go strictly iPad / iTouch etc with a portable player. Bose makes a battery powered unit that uses Bluetooth so no wiring needed. Radio can be done in a similar manner...

Re: Our New 5.0 is Coming To Vancouver Island March 2013

Ellen and I are checking our time off and really hope we can be there.

We spent 5 nights lakeside on 2 different visits during our vacation Sept 2012. The water was warm and we really enjoyed our time there. This visit will be different being in the middle of a sea of fiberglass trailers.
