Yes, it is good policy to carry a spare stinger, in case you get stung by a thief.

I usually crack my shin on the stinger about two or three times a year. This for the past 50 years or so. I do not learn very fast, or in this case, not at all. I also hit my head on stuff a few times a year and have the scars to show for it. Makes you know you're alive and only hurts for a little while. You have company, just not good company.

People tear apart live electrical systems for copper to sell as scrap. The greed, stupidity, and disregard for others' property of criminals is hard to overestimate.
I still don't worry much about stuff like this being stolen, but I have used a ball mount lock. If I take the ball mount out during a trip, I leave it in the back of the van.

I think I read about the Andersen theft over on fiberglassrv.com. Current aluminum scrap price for 6061 aluminum alloy is 84/lb, so maybe $10 for the billet. Easier to remove it than worry.

Works for me:
If they want to go to the trouble of unbolting the ball assembly from the receiver they can have it.

There was a post on 9/16/14 by Catchlight titled "Theft Strands Rookie Escape Owners in Rossland" that mentions the theft of an Anderson. If I could figure out how to put the link to the post I certainly would.
I've used the post to justify all sorts of things to Hubby -- he's still not falling for it all, though!

I have short legs, and my Curt weight-distributing hitch has "wings" that are at my kneecap height. It got me again this morning. Arrgh.

And, how long before those are stolen? One more thing to worry about.

Those banging their shin repeatedly may want to consider something like these:
