Vancouver to Kitimat and back

We have just returned from a trip to Kitimat BC and back from Vancouver, about 1400 km each way (870 miles). We broke the journey at Lac La Hache Provincial Park and Vanderhoof BC, and stayed at Lakelse Lake Provincial Park at the northern end. This is an excellent park -- very clean and well managed. On the way back we ran into Peter and Alice and their Escape 19. Link to photos here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/brian_...57656456231339

We made an earlier trip there in 2011: https://www.flickr.com/photos/brian_...57626786556499

Nice trip, Brian. Did you consider doing the loop and taking the ferry from Prince Rupert to Vancouver Island on the way back? Pretty expensive, I imagine.

You are right: The vehicle fare from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert is $460.25 one way plus $39.25/ft over 20 ft plus $202.00 per passenger.

The fare from Tsawwassen to Duke Point is $55.40 to Vancouver Island plus $6.35/ft over 20 ft plus $16.90 per passenger.

Wow! At that price from Prince Rupert, you should get to keep the ferry!

Many years ago we took the ferry from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert. Left at 4pm and it was dark by 5pm. Spent the trip in our cabin listening to coat hangers bang against the wall in the next cabin closet.
Arrived in Rupert at 5 am or so and decided to make a run for it, driving non-stop back to Vancouver.

We did it 6 years ago to go to Haida Gwaii also--we drove to Port Hardy, left our car at the motel we stayed at--walked onto the ferry...ferried over to Haida Gwaii and rented a car for the week we were there (there was 4 of us) Walking on both ferries saved us a ton of money.... We couldn't believe the prices to take the car---and it was day time trip both ways---coming over from the islands to Prince Rupert was a night sailing so the four of us rented a cabin and slept in bunk beds!

We planned this trip because we had sold our Boler and were waiting for our new 15' Escape to be built---well, we ended up buying a used 17B before that!!! (darn good move on our part!)

We went from Port Hardy to Prince Rupert on the ferry with our VW Camper and 2 kids about 20 years ago. We departed about 10 AM and arrived at Prince Rupert about 11 PM, the light was still twilight.

I don't remember the cost but none of us will ever forget the day. The weather was perfect.

Mmmm Lakelse Lake. The standard by which I judge all other campsites. It's beautiful nestled among the old growth trees. I miss that place.
As for the ferry ride from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy. Yes it is very expensive but if you can afford it you won't regret the trip. Go during the summer and make sure it is the day Cruze. You see nothing at night and you loose the whe point of it.
Think of it as a mini Cruze. Everyone should get to see the inside passage at least once.
Also if you at lucky enough to get there on a sunny day the drive from Prince Rupert to Terrace is just as spectacular.
