FYI for Oregon buyers

I was first told I needed a temporary trip permit to be legal when driving a new trailer into Oregon. But today I went to DMV and the knowledgable employee said not so. I was able to register and get a new plate to put on in Chilliwack and then be legal all the way home! I didn't need to physically bring the trailer to DMV because it is new. Saved me $30 for the temporary permit. Registration is $295 for two years, cash or check only.

DMV needs the original bill of sale, federal declaration of safety, and the certificate of origin so you need to make copies for yourself. Tammy included all of these in the packet she sent me before the final payment. You also need insurance information and other personal numbers to fill in the application for registration.

Hope this helps new Oregon Escapers.

Eric

I second the process. Pretty quick and easy to title and register in Oregon with the documents ETI provided.

I took the paperwork Tammy provided to the local Klamath Falls DMV office and walked out in about 15 minutes with temporary registration, plates, and tags. Then had to wait two months to get the trailer! ;-)

I had no problem in California. I stopped at a small-town DMV (in a strip mall, no less) on the way back from Chilliwack. In and out, with license plates, in about 20 minutes, and some of that was waiting for the gent in front of me. Spent twice that time showing the trailer to a couple in the parking lot after I'd screwed on the plates.

No kidding. And to rub it in- no sales tax and $141.75 license and registration fees for two years doesn't hurt either!

I went through a similar easy process to title/register Ten Forward back in July. From walking through the door at DMV to walking out... 11 minutes! I'm cheap though. We pay by the foot and good for two years. I waited until the day before I left for Chilliwack to get everything done. I wasn't about to pay for a month extra I didn't own the trailer. YMMV

In Alberta, there is a one time fee (about $110 Cdn) for a "perpetual" registration of your trailer. A bit high as an initial fee (maybe not compared to some of you others though), but very nice not having to ever renew it. Wish the motor vehicle registrations were the same.

That would be nice! The yearly, or bi-yearly, registration requirement gets pricey- some states way more than others.

I presume you still have to buy a yearly license tag, as we do here in BC?
I pay $90 ( or $60 - can't remember ) per year which covers the license tag and basic mandatory insurance ( liability ).

Most provinces don't intertwine their licensing and insurance systems. Here in Alberta, and I believe in Ontario, the provincial government doesn't sell insurance, so the license fee is just a license fee.

At least here, there is no separate liability insurance for the trailer - it is covered by the tow vehicle (my trailer is listed on my auto policy for clarity, but there no associated premium paid).

In Alberta, the trailer license fee is truly one-time (lifetime of the trailer with that owner). It looks like it is the same in Ontario: Driver's Handbook: Registering your trailer.

The $46 is just a one time fee. Good for as long as I own the trailer. No annual fee.

Ours is steep here in Texas. $45 for the state registration fee and an additional $21.50 for my county -- and that's annually.

I just registered and got our license plate this morning!

Once I got to the counter it took 10-15 minutes. We had just finished everything up when the DMV computers went offline so it may have taken longer if I was #62 instead of #61. Also a good thing I brought the checkbook because the credit card machines were offline as well.

I'm glad Oregon has a reasonable process without VIN inspections, etc.
