Deere

We used to service all the company cars for the Deere dealership in Cedar Rapids. It
was owned by Dan Schwitter. I used to get novelties and catalogs from those fellas all the time. We had some industrial line Deeres in the parks. They were good utility tractors. Had a 5010 that pulled our scraper for trail development. Strong tractor. Stock and layoffs are soft with depressed corn and bean prices compared to a couple years ago. Lots of used inventory right now.'

Ah yes, John Deere. What else is there? Today's modern tractors are being guided by about 12 satellites. All you do is monitor your equipment and lift and turn at the end.

I'll try to slip by the rendezvous if it is wet and we can't work but all indications are for an early harvest. Heading up Monday to look things over. Also Iowa Dave, did you ever have any smoked Carp? Was pretty good stuff. Loren

Of course I have a comment. I like the Farmall H, Super H and the M. All classics. My neighbor has a restored 1456. When he takes a parade lap on the association road and cracks her open and spins that turbo up, my heart skips a beat. My brother in law was an IH mechanic and was in on the design and refinement of the axial flow combines. Although he had no formal training, engineers bounced ideas off him and sent him parts to try and to evaluate. Lots of red ones in our country too.

Loren, I was out to the farm in Tama County last night and could see some color on the beans. A couple hot dry weeks at the most. They were combining on our way to St Malo Manitoba last Friday. It was very wet in the field, every tractor I saw had tracks. Lots of Cats. It would be nice to see you at Thompson if you get a chance,
Dave

You can't beat a IH W4. I had a 1952 I restored. Should have kept it.
Cheers

My lawn "tractor" is green: genuine John Deere. It was the cheapest thing with a twin-cylinder engine and hydrostatic transmission that I could find... and Deere had Tuff Torq build an even cheaper and non-rebuildable version of their cheapest transaxle, just for this model (the L-series). Deere previously sold this sort of stuff with orange paint (okay, orange plastic) and called it the Sabre series, but eventually just went with the regular green. I have no doubt that Deere makes great equipment, but they are also quite willing to sell cheap stuff if that's what people want to buy. There is no safe colour of tractor...

Here, an orange tractor doesn't necessarily mean you couldn't afford green (John Deere); it could mean cheaper (Kyoti - Korean), but it might mean better (Kubota - Japanese).
