Deere
We used to service all the company cars for the Deere dealership in Cedar Rapids. It
was owned by Dan Schwitter. I used to get novelties and catalogs from those fellas all the time. We had some industrial line Deeres in the parks. They were good utility tractors. Had a 5010 that pulled our scraper for trail development. Strong tractor. Stock and layoffs are soft with depressed corn and bean prices compared to a couple years ago. Lots of used inventory right now.'

Ah yes, John Deere. What else is there? Today's modern tractors are being guided by about 12 satellites. All you do is monitor your equipment and lift and turn at the end.
I'll try to slip by the rendezvous if it is wet and we can't work but all indications are for an early harvest. Heading up Monday to look things over. Also Iowa Dave, did you ever have any smoked Carp? Was pretty good stuff. Loren

Of course I have a comment. I like the Farmall H, Super H and the M. All classics. My neighbor has a restored 1456. When he takes a parade lap on the association road and cracks her open and spins that turbo up, my heart skips a beat. My brother in law was an IH mechanic and was in on the design and refinement of the axial flow combines. Although he had no formal training, engineers bounced ideas off him and sent him parts to try and to evaluate. Lots of red ones in our country too.
Loren, I was out to the farm in Tama County last night and could see some color on the beans. A couple hot dry weeks at the most. They were combining on our way to St Malo Manitoba last Friday. It was very wet in the field, every tractor I saw had tracks. Lots of Cats. It would be nice to see you at Thompson if you get a chance,

You can't beat a IH W4. I had a 1952 I restored. Should have kept it.

My lawn "tractor" is green: genuine John Deere. It was the cheapest thing with a twin-cylinder engine and hydrostatic transmission that I could find... and Deere had Tuff Torq build an even cheaper and non-rebuildable version of their cheapest transaxle, just for this model (the L-series). Deere previously sold this sort of stuff with orange paint (okay, orange plastic) and called it the Sabre series, but eventually just went with the regular green. I have no doubt that Deere makes great equipment, but they are also quite willing to sell cheap stuff if that's what people want to buy. There is no safe colour of tractor...
Here, an orange tractor doesn't necessarily mean you couldn't afford green (John Deere); it could mean cheaper (Kyoti - Korean), but it might mean better (Kubota - Japanese).

Kubota
We had a Very good Kubota salesman when I was with the parks. He Could really sell and knew how to bid. We had two Kubota M5040s for drawbar tractors to pull implements. and a Big 80 Hp that pulled our 21 Foot Mott interstater flail. Their little B6200 was also bulletproof and their compact 40 hp or so with glide shift transmission and loader did a lot of work and sipped fuel. Kubota out front mowers were great too. Prices went up and we could never get a Z turn on a low bid basis.
We had a Massey industrial tractor,
Gas. That had a road gear in it that would
scare you.
I have a New Holland TC40 D It's been pretty good and will move a lot of snow.

Not a farmer, but a grass cutter and I had a 1975 Cub Cadet 1650 with a Kohler single cylinder 16 horse with a 50" mowing deck. Bought it used in 1985 after wearing out an old Wheel Horse and a new sears mower cutting 2.5 acres of grass. The 1650 had a hydrostatic drive, a drive shaft and full hydraulics, I really looked forward to winter snow plowing, felt like a kid with a bulldozer.

Cub cadets
Those Kohlers were a pretty stout little power plant on the cub cadets. A friend of mine had one that he tilled gardens with. It really did a nice job and mowed well too.
We had Kohlers on several golf course mowers reel type for tees and collars. Started with a pull rope, usually first pull.

Nothing beats the sound of an Easthope. And, fishing beats mowing.

Reminds me of the African Queen. Now if we're talking about fine engine sounds - give me an Offy in an Indy Roadster any day.

I've been fascinated with engines for well over 50 years. I've heard a lot of them and can't say I have a true favorite. Those little Offys in a midget going down the back straightaway and into turn three on the one mile dirt oval at Du Quoin Illinois with the driver having one hand on the wheel and the other jacking the weights on the front were a sight, sound and smell I'll never forget. Starting a D7 with a pony motor, hit and miss gas engines, and a smooth running outboard a long way from the dock are
all precious. Best sound could be my vehicle starting in an empty parking lot, about dark after several hours of ice fishing in 0 degree F weather with a light snow coming down. I'm sure a lot of us have favorites that are totally unknown to others, I've been cataloging sensory experiences for a long time now and hope I don't stop anytime soon.

Hi: Iowa Dave... After 4 days/nights boon docking with 1500 or so RVer's and their generators the best sounding engine is "None at all"!!! You've probably never heard of them. LoL... Solar power is silent.
