2018 Mississippi River Rendezvous September 28-30
Thomson Causeway in Thomson Illinois was such a nice location last year, we have decided to return. Having the Mississippi River greet you each morning was a highlight for me. I know it captured the attention of all those that attended.
The official rally will run from Friday to Sunday, you are encouraged to extend your stay on one or both sides of those dates. You will not be alone. The booking window for campsites opens on March 28, 2018. We will be using sites 99-126, but three additional loops are available, two of those are within easy walking distance. Sites 69 to 78 are in another loop but immediately adjacent to the recommended sites. Booking is done at www.recreation.gov.
We plan to add a happy hour on Friday, it will be held in the campground at a time to be determined. We will again use the shelter building Stone, it is a beautiful location for our Saturday potluck.
This is year four for the rally. It is a nice group of owners who enjoy their trailers. Everyone is welcome.

I thought I would start the ball rolling with a question for those who attended the rally last year at Thomson Causeway. There was a rather rare and unusual bird seen at the rally, can you identify it? This is not a trick question, there is not some hidden meaning.

The Iowa Dave Warbler..... rare but frequently heard when nearby...Known as Iowa's most friendly and loquacious bird. Range: all over the US and Canada. Habitat: partial shade especially near white fiberglass. Diet: whatever your having...

Paul, glad to see we are returning to Thomson Causeway again, really liked that spot, and much quieter train traffic than at Fisherman's Cove.
Hope to see you there. Sorry can't help with the bird.
Adrian
on edit - I see Eric guessed the bird, I'm sure that's the one.

Birds
We saw quite a few nice birds while camped at Thompson Causeway. The adjacent river and water Lilly area had regular visitors such as the Great Blue Heron and the large Egrets which we observed being bullied by some Great Blues that had flown in from Wisconsin. In addition I took a walk one morning down near the wood dump and saw a pileated woodpecker. His rhythmic thunk thunk thunk pecking allows me to find him easily. I gues my bird highlight there was the group of White Pelicans. About 25 or so and they hung around several days. They made me think of one of my favorite pieces of classic poetry.
A wonderful bird is the pelican
His bill can hold more than his bellican
He can take in his beak
Food enough for a week
But I’m damned if I see how the helican
Dixon Lanier Merritt.
We will be attending. Late at night if you’re near the shower you might hear the Iowa Warbler and his rendition of the Bob Wills classic San Antonio Rose.

I thought that bird was extinct, long, long ago. I read the last one was seen flying south before winters approach. Some say it was meaner than a bluebird in nesting season, an aerobatic flier but often smacked into shiny objects. I haven't seen one in several years. I hope they've survived.

Did the Iowa Dave Warbler ask the Blue Herons if they were from Wisconsin?
And why Dave did you include the photo of me holding up the tree?

Looks like an absolutely wonderful rally . We had it on our schedule last year but some unexpected medical issues forced us to cancel
Maybe by this September we will again be able to travel and attend the rally.
We hope the rally is a success and enjoyed by all who attend.
God Bless

Adrian,
I did not have to ask the Herons. They were way to aggressive for Illinois Herons!. My laser sharp vision noted a small red W on the little sun visors they were wearing on their heads.
I'm sorry Adrian, I had that picture sent to me by the Corps of Engineers Rangers. They wanted to know if I could identify the guy trying to sell his camper in a Federal campground. I told them he looked familiar and that I thought I saw a picture like that in the Post Office.
Better have a tandem on your next trip, those guys are like the RCMP, and they always get their man. A new trailer will mess them up.

If I am not booked at a festival in Tennessee, we might try to make this, since Ohio is just a skip away. Sounds great, if we show I ll be the one with a fiddle in hand.

Yes, but with that toxic waste site you were camped in you couldn't give anything away. What caused all that toxicity? Some imported grain based beverage from InBev? The origin might be the southern portion of the Northern Hemisphere.

The FBI is looking for the guy visible in this photo as the one responsible for dumping toxic chemicals into my site. Does he look familiar?

Up here we don’t need a wall. With the tow boats in the river and a 7 mile an hour current in the middle, all they need to do is monitor the bridges. If you can swim that creek between Illinois and Iowa we will let you in and give you a swimming scholarship at the University of Iowa. Same goes for Nebraskans on the West coast. When I was a kid, one of my teachers
told us that Iowa was growing to the degree that we would soon rate 8 representatives in Congress as we had 7 at the time. We’ve grown so much and so fast that we now have 4.
We have more ghost towns than Colorado. 560 School districts have gone to 345 in my time and we could probably do with 50 or 75 less. States have slogans. A while back ours was
Iowa, a place to grow! When the wags got through with it the slogan became
Iowa, A place to grow......old!

Hey Dave, perhaps those Nebraskans can't make it over the Missouri River, but what about those pesky South Dakotans, that Big Sioux River doesn't look too big to swim
Now we're off topic we should only be talking about the Mississippi, where we love to camp right beside the river.
