West coasters may want to go up the Cassiar Highway, very scenic! From the east, I tend to go up through Dawson Creek instead, I would call it nice but not as scenic. Thinking about it for 2018. Last time I did it I went in July.

I don't usually point out spelling mistakes of one letter. However, having seen it happen twice already today, it's the "Cassiar Highway".

PS If you go, have a stop at Meziadin Lake. It was amazing 30+ years ago.

Dawson Creek, Mile Zero of the Alaska Highway.
The Alaska Hotel shown in the background is no longer there. It burned down a couple of years ago.

There is a decent campground at mile zero at Dawson Creek. There is also a nicer one run by the Rotary club up about 50 kms or so?

Tom,
You are correct it is 1,000 miles to Prince Rupert, but I just re-checked Mapquest and it is 1,616 miles (29 hours 14 minutes) from Seattle to Skagway via the Cassiar. Like I said my wife just drove it and I drove it twice last year. Maybe your thinking kilometers (it is 2,600 kilometers).

To those subject to getting seasick (me), the Alaska Ferry, while it is talked about being the inland passage route, does go into the open ocean. There were a couple of times, 1 to 1/2 hours long, where we suddenly were in some seriously rough water.

Eric ... You are correct ... I should have checked MapQuest before posting. I get ~1600 miles Seattle to Skagway too. My memory was wrong. I have driven about 6 one way trips between Seattle and either Skagway or Prince Rupert over the years. If time is of issue, I have punched out the drive to Prince Rupert out in 2 days, but since I'm always driving solo, multiple 500 mile "days" can render me a noodle. I have tried to keep that pace heading to Skagway but no can do for that distance.
I apologize for the "alternative facts"!
Tom

We are trying to put together something for Alaska. Leaving after the Rally and touring for about 2-3 months.

I am curious - did you research and make reservations at all of those campgrounds or did you just have a list of possible campgrounds in the vicinity of where you thought you would be each day? In other words, is is possible to just "wing it" and have some confidence of finding a place to stay or is it essential to plan carefully with advance reservations? We are in a perfect starting locations for points north with Alaska, BC, Yukon and NWT in our plans once we have our trailer.

Lets start a thread for Alaska 2018.

Hi Tom,
We would like to explore going there after the rally. Is Jun and July the best time to visit?

I am planning to spend three or more weeks on a shakedown cruise in Washington and BC before heading back to Colorado.

Hello, I have sold one of the properties I need to sell and will put the second on the market in early spring. It might be a push to be ready to go next summer but I am going to try to make it.

Are you planning to spend most of that time in Alaska? or spending some time at points of interest along the way (if there are any)?

Ideally, we'd like to do most of the driving on the weekends while working/visiting local points of interest along the way.
Are there folks who have similar plans?

Don't give reservations a second thought. Yukon has plentiful, inexpensive and good campsites and in Alaska you can pretty much camp where you want. The only exception is Denali. We couldn't get a campsite in the park but we left the trailer in the visitor's information parking lot and took the day long bus trip into the park. Couldn't see Mt. McKinley because of cloud, not unusual. Went down the highway and stopped at a rest/campsite area, $10 a night. Clouds cleared and we got a great view of the elusive mountain.
We left Osoyoos and went up to Wells Grey Park and did a circular route. We had very little back tracking. We then took the Alaska Ferry down to Prince Rupert to see all the island places not accessible by road.

I picked up my trailer on July 10 but stayed in Washington and Oregon for a couple weeks. BC was on fire and there were so many evacuations I couldn't keep up with what was burning and where the evacuations were. As I left Oregon in late July they had a fire ban and then the fires started a couple weeks later. Now I am really planning to do a big circle after the Escape Rally but I may not go all the way to the big part of Alaska. I'm also planning to go to the Boler shindig in Winnipeg.
