Book Review: “The Longest Road” by Phil Caputo

If you are a fan of travel books in the spirit of John Steinbeck’s “Travels with Charley”, William Least Heat Moon’s “Blue Highways” and even Peter Jenkin’s “Walk Across America”….and you like small travel trailers, you need to read “The Longest Road” by Phil Caputo.

It’s not a book about towing, camping, and mods, but a story about what he finds at age 70 as he journeys in a rented 19 foot 1962 Airstream ,with two English Setters, from Key West to Deadhorse Alaska at the end of the Dalton Highway.

(His life would have been more comfortable, since he crossed the border at Sumas, to swap the ‘Stream for a 19’ Escape!)

Caputo is a great author, and this book is a great read. Warning: after reading it, I can’t focus on work.

Read Mr. Caputo's book about a month ago, after my wife read it. Talk about a great way to get stoked for taking possession of our first Escape on the 30th! Great writer, great stories and an adventure to aspire to! I particularly liked the brief story of their visit to Chicken, AK - especially the part about how it got it's name (Google it!)!

I first read Caputo about 25 years ago. His book "A Rumor of War" about his experiences as a young Lieutenant in Vietnam was a good read. Thanks for the recommendation, I'm going to buy it for my Kindle tonight!

I am in the middle of reading it right now, and it is a good read, but I would have to say I do not think it is as good as Blue Highways. I also put Blue Highways above Steinbeck's book, even though Steinbeck is a great author. Personal preference, I guess.

Couldn't finish it. Not my particular genre I guess.
