After the first couple miles I felt like I was "back in th' groove" towing a trailer and the 4Runner handled that little 17B without a problem, no bouncing, no swaying, no creaking, no groaning. I used the cruise control most of the time and unless the road was level the OD was locked out. Tranny temps at the torque converter stayed in the 140F to 150F range and only once hit 171F. Mileage, according to the on board computer, was 22.5 going to Chilliwack and 14.7 coming back.

So, how are you measuring the tranny temp? And did you end up putting in an extra oil cooler? Or did the 4Runner already come with a bigger one to tow with?

My 2012 Frontier came with the factory towing package, but I'm still trying to figure out if I got a bigger tranny oil cooler with that.

The current generation of 4Runners don't have the larger tranny cooler so I had an auxiliary cooler installed. When I bought mine, (used), and knowing the larger radiator was no longer part of the towing package, I asked the dealer if they installed them, (hoping they did and I would be able to get one in the deal). Their response was, "Why do you need one?" Well, there's no way I'm going to be towing even the 17B without protecting the tranny and an auxiliary cooler is good insurance.

To measure the temperatures I installed the ScanGuage II Ultra Compact and programmed it to read temperatures at both the pan and torque converter.

Amazon carries them:
