Warranty

Does something smell rotten here?

I received an email today, this morning, addressed to me from someone claiming to be Escape trailer. It was titled “Warranty…” and, “To Whom it may Concern.”
“Escape Trailer Industries is announcing a recall on the trailer frames manufactured for the 15’, 17’ and 19’ Escape travel trailers between 2009 and 2014.”
It goes on to explain their concerns and solutions and details compensation. Repairs must be made by appointment but they'll send the repair part to you for work by a welder of your choice. They list a contact email address ...with a mis-spelling ... and a telephone number with the wrong area code, 604, which is British Columbia, but not the one Escape uses, except for FAX.

Anybody else get this? Just being careful.

I got it too. It's the cracked frame problem on some trailers with the 3" frame? They'll give you $50. to pay the welder?

Checked mine previously and have a 4" frame.

Unfortunately, it looks like the real deal. They do use 604 as I have called it. As for a wrong spelling, I saw a letter out of there with Tammy and Reace's last name spelled incorrectly which I assume came from an employee! Hope it is an easy fix.

Myron, it looks legit... I got one as well. The bad email address looks like a typo. The domain name as it is in the email isn't registered to anybody, so it can't be an intentional misdirection. And a reverse phone number lookup shows that the 604 number does belong to Escape Trailer Industries.

I am disappointed by this. The fridge, the solar panels, and now this. Wouldn't be as big a deal if I was local, but this shows the disadvantages of buying from a small non-local company.

And I gotta ask... 3 issues like this in short order? Typical? Bad luck? Or are they pushing too many boundaries too hard and too fast?

Time for ETI to call in the Profit? Marcus Melonis would give 'em an earful probably. Their back-end support is lacking IMHO, and recently got a reply from no doubt the same person responsible for the above problem with grammar. Not good for the rep piece.

I got that email and I guess I have a different take on this due to my experiences with another fiberglass trailer manufacture (who I won't name so Donna doesn't get mad at me again )

From my reading, the refrigerator problem is clearly not caused by Escape but by the appliance manufacturer. To me, Reace is going way beyond what most trailer builders would do to solve a problem he did not create.

The solar panel problem is an Escape problem, but Reace quickly made modifications to the process and sent parts to owners to remedy the situation.

This frame recall, to me, is no different than the many recalls my Toyota (considered by most to be one of the highest quality auto builders) cars and trucks have experienced. Reace found a problem and quickly moved to remedy it for us before it became big problem for anyone.

Like any manufactured product, Escape trailers have glitches and some things we wish were different. But I don't know of any with owners as committed to customer satisfaction and providing value at a reasonable cost as Reace and Tammy.

Frame preventative repair

We received the email too. We will get the kit, get it installed, put a little paint on the raw metal and go camping. In my former life, I managed about 40 trailers from small utility trailers to one that hauled our international TD 24 with swamp pads, a bulldozer that weighed 46,000 lbs. we had two mechanics who were class a welders who had rebuilt heavy equipment in the Jungles of Vietnam Nam and done underwater welding on a nuclear submarine. Good welders are not hard to find. We spent about $6,000 per year on new raw steel plate and angle 90 percent of which we cut up for fish plates, gussets and braces to repair trucks, mowers and trailers. Welds, strengthening and repairs are a fact of life. Fix it, hook up and get out of town. Sorry about the rant. These problems are minor in the grand scheme of things. Believe me.

Frame recalls on all-molded-towables have been happening since the early 1970s Trilliums. Scamp had some issues at the A-Frame bend in the mid-1980s. It's good to hear ETI is standing by their product for repairs even on trailers long out of warranty.

Ours was manufactured early in 2013 -- not sure exactly since I bought it off the lot. It is a 3" frame.

You wish it didn't happen, but I know of a lot of new farm grain trailers that were recalled last fall for reinforcement of the frames. And the farmers were told not to use them even though it was the middle of the harvest. Loren

Just in case anyone is still confused about the Escape phone number - an area code for Chilliwack is 604 (the only one available there when Escape Trailer Industries started), and the only other area code which Escape uses is for toll-free calls. There's nothing wrong with the phone number in the notice.

(Fixed wording as per Bruce's point re. other area codes)

Not entirely true Brian.

778 and 236 are valid in the province also. Whether ETI has a new number is not something I know. 236 area code is new to me though.

It's Marcus Lemonis.

If my memory is correct, I remember Escape switching to 4" frame material for the 19' at the time that they started making the 21' trailer. Mine was built in late November, December of 2013 and I expect to find 4" material when I go out to where it is stored and measure it.

You are right, Kevin. All 21's have 4" frames. The other trailers converted over the next while.
