300 Lumens on a Single AA?

Ordered a couple of these today. I'll let the forum know what I think once I have them, but by all accounts they put out a ton of light for such a small flashlight:

I didn't order one, but yesterday I put this into my Amazon Wish List. (I do have a birthday coming up!)

Olight SR52UT Intimidator Cree Xp-L Hi LED 1100 Lumen Extended-Range Rechargeable Flashlight - - Amazon.com

If one magically appears under my birthday cake, I'll be using it for 4 months in Big Bend starting January. I'll resurrect this thread and report back.

Ahhh marketing.
Which should I buy "Tactical" or "Intimidator"

Which would be the "Professional" choice?

A flashlight thread - I love flashlights! My latest favorite for having around home is this MagLite LED It's amazing how far the beam carries for the price.

Rayovac sent me this Rayovac Indestructible as a replacement for a nice MagLite that their batteries leaked into and ruined. I keep it in the Tacoma - seems like it can take a real beating.

I think that they are all professionally intimidating in a tactical sense. Whereas all my freebies from Harbor Freight are completely unprofessional and would intimidate no one!

I hope Mary never decides to count how many flashlights I actually own....

The problem with a flashlight, is you need one, to find one.

That's my rationale for having them spread out everywhere, around the house, in the trailer, in the Tacoma, in the Corolla, garage, basement .....

I have one of these on my keychain, and if I don't forget to turn it off, it works.
Uses 2016 batteries. Cheapest place for button batteries is Mountain Equipment Coop.

I much prefer headlamps to flashlights, as they can leave both hands free to do things. While I do have some powerful ones, I generally just use one with a retractable cable so they fit nicely in the pocket, even more compact than many flashlights. If desired, you can just use it like a flashlight too.

I have an older ZIPCA, and it works great. Plenty of light for any task. Click on image.

The e+LITE looks good too. Really small, but with big features. I might pick one of these puppies up. Click on image.

These are both available at MEC in Canada, and I bet REI carries them too.

As long as you have a nearby Harbor Freight, their "free" 9 lamp, 3 AAA battery flashlights solves the problem - I have a couple dozen. While I start out with one in each place, the only problem is I eventually end up with a bunch of them in one location & none where I need it!

Hi, my name is Ron and I really like flashlights.

But first, there's boys and their toys and then there's real flashlights. My 10 million candle power light will light up a mountain side. Only thing brighter than it in a rescue/disaster situation is a Nightsun on a helicopter. Yup, big and heavy, with a lead acid battery and goes through juice like there's no tomorrow. However, it does have a battery saver 500,000 CP mode. Maybe it's time to convert it to led.

Yes, like some others, I do have a few flashlights around the house and trailer etc. The 5 on the right were scattered around my desk top.

Ron

I have a few of those Jon, but they seem to break and/or not work when you need them. The amount of light they put out is kind of dim too. Of course, they're free, so I guess I shouldn't have expected much.

I picked up one of these, needed it for some serious outdoor work in the dark in the backcountry. A little pricier but man, does it throw the light....

Dumbest purchase I've made is Stanley Tripod flashlight.
It takes 9 AA batteries ( in the legs ), which was OK when I could get batteries from work, but now I'm retired.
It doesn't work as well as a head lamp, which is what I use now, especially when working with tools.

Yah but it looks like one of the Martians from War of the Worlds.

A comment and a story...

Take a close look at the specs of the flashlights that take an AA battery and claim a large number of lumens. Typically they take either AA or 14500 format batteries. The AA are 1.5v, the 14500 are (iirc) 3.7v. You only get the full brightness with the 14500 format battery. Put a AA in them, and you typically get 100 lumens or so.

Now the story... Cleaning out my Dad's basement when he was moving, we came across a "flashlight" -- it was actually a 120v hand-held flood light, that was originally intended for video recording. He was getting rid of it, and while I didn't have any use for it, I took it home. That night, on our porch, turned it on. Wow! But all I could see was it lighting up the inside of the screened-in porch. So I got closer to the screen so I could see out into the yard... And then I started to get that smell you get when something is getting too hot. Quickly turned off the light figuring it was overheating, but it was fine. On the other hand, I came just short of melting a hole through the screen... There's a reason they called them "hot lights"...

Same here. It's a handy design, but that's too many batteries to buy and throw away, and it's just too much of a pain to manage all of those batteries when using rechargeables. By current standards it isn't very bright, but was decent for the time.

Yes, the 14500 is a roughly AA-sized lithium battery; lithiums are about 3.7V cells. The difference in performance makes sense.
