Portable media server setup

I noticed some discussion in another thread regarding the stereo system option and though I’d share our setup.

In our 19, we decided not to include any extra electronics (TV mount, antennas, sound system etc) for a few reasons – partially because of interior aesthetics and avoiding technological obsolescence but mainly because we tend to use our phones or tablets for music and video.

Our portable travel/trailer setup consists of:
- Tablets / phones
- Bluetooth speaker (JBL Flip 4)
- Seagate wireless plus WIFI media server
- Clamping bendable tablet holder

The Seagate Wireless Plus is basically a harddrive (2TB in this case) with a built-in WIFI hotspot. Connect your phone or tablet to its WIFI and then use a web browser or an app to navigate the media stored on it. We’ve only used it for watching movies, and it works pretty much as advertised. It hasn't been perfect though as it has hung up a couple times and needed a reset. The nice thing is that it supports multiple streams, so the kids can be watching different movies at the same time. To load files onto it, you have to connect it to your home computer using the USB cable.

The device does have a battery but I haven’t found it that useful, so I installed an extra 12V/USB plug in an upper cabinet. This was actually pretty easy since I had a captain’s lamp just below to tap into for the 12 V supply.

The tablet holder works very well if you can find a suitable place to clamp it. When my wife and I want to watch a move at night, temporarily clamping it to the overhead cabinet as pictured works well and then we just put the speaker on the bed.
