I guess growing up as a kid and building lots of fires helped me be able to light one easily. It really isn't that hard. You just have to take the kindling down to a small enough size that it lights good.

If you prefer, you could do as a friend did earlier this year out at our land, during a rain storm, and use a chunk of solid rocket fuel. One of our first fires in a new pit I built this year. Here is the crappy phone video I did of it.

If you have ever sat around a propane campfire, the smell of burned propane is terrible to my nose, any very offensive. The smell of lingering campfire smoke is wonderful, and very comforting, as campfires are a HUGE part of our camping experience. We have one at least 95% of the evenings we go camping, if they are allowed.

Sorry, Jim, but this is too good to pass up. Do they sell solid rocket fuel at Camping World for the purpose of starting fires? :LOL

Actually, I bet it works well.

My friend is an avid rocketeer. I used to do the small model rocketry stuff with him when in high school, but he progressed much further with it. A small group of them build large scale rockets to launch, and own the Canadian record for altitude. What this was, was about a 6" piece cut off a 4' long solid fuel rocket engine. This was an engine they found a defect in, and the manufacturer sent them a replacement free of charge. It cost around $1,200 for the engine. David Buhler of this group is our fire lighter.

They have done lots of other rockets too. A total bunch of geeks. LOL

And corporate sponsorships to boot! They don't sound like weekend hobbyists.

Ya but fire is fire, even if streaking through the atmosphere.

They all have full time jobs. Or did. My friend just retired. Well, from his real job that is. He still does the photography thing, amongst other things he likes. He was our wedding photographer 30 years ago, and will be shooting my daughters wedding in May.

Pity that you are forced to suffer reading them too, eh?
