Thermal Cooker - I'm a huge fan!

Some time ago I read an article about thermal cookers. I think it was on the DIY RV site. I was quite intrigued and did some more research. Hit the Amazon site, of course. The size I wanted, a 1.5 liter was out of stock, but it finally came back in. This is it:

https://www.amazon.com/Thermos-Brand...mal+cooker+1.5

I am in LOVE with it! I wanted something that would cook a meal for me while I was otherwise engaged. Such as driving the rig or vending at a show. Many times I'm just too tired to fix a meal, especially after a long day. With all my food restrictions, going out to eat is usually not an option. And when vending, sandwiches gets old really fast as gluten-free bread is pretty wretched.

Basically what I do is fill it in the morning with my meal choice, bring it to a boil in the container, put it inside an insulated, sealed outer container and then let it cook while I'm doing other stuff. I don't need to plug it in.

I'm still playing around with getting the meat and potatoes sized properly and timing, but I'm getting there. Out of 3 meals (so far) one was so-so, but still edible, while the other two were much better.

When I went up to ETI last week to get the awning fixed, I started a pot of corned beef and potatoes. It cooked while I was driving up there and it was ready when I pulled into the campground and was hungry for dinner. I put it inside a small soft-sided cooler, put towels around it and set it behind my seat in the Tundra. I did all that to lessen the risk of it falling over when I hauled ass around corners (not!).

If you're cooking for more than one or two people, you'll want a larger size, but this is the perfect size for my needs. I'm heading over to Spokane this weekend for a craft show and I'm going to use it for lunch on both days.

This cookbook has also been quite handy:

Anyway, wanted to let others know about this nifty device. And I'm wondering if others make use of it. I was not interested in a crock pot and this fits my needs much better.

Laura,

I bought a Saratoga Jack's thermal cooker and have been experimenting with it. I like the option of 2 containers to make 2 things at one time. They are amazing for us campers so you don't have to arrive somewhere worn out and try to think up something for dinner.

Thanks for the review. We got our Aeropress coffee maker from reading this forum and it looks like the thermal cooker is next.

Yay! Someone else with one. I thought about the larger size, but it's just too big for one person, which is how I'll mostly use mine. Although the longer cook time with the larger one could be appealing, depending on the situation.

I used it again today at a show and it was wonderful having that hot meal and several other vendors were rather envious when they saw what I was eating.

You can also fix the pot when you're taking a break on a long day's drive. Yeah, I'm gonna be using mine a lot!

We also have and use a thermal cooker
https://www.amazon.com/THERMOS-Insul...op_mb_pd_title
We found simpler, softer foods cook easily.
Denser foods such as beans and stews (beef, potatoes, carrots) will cook, but but benefit from a mid-cook reh2eat. Anyway, this is our boondock alternative to our cookers and instapots.

Does it come with recipes, is it mostly meat and cream soups added like crock pots. I did read your post about dietary restrictions - totally understand, have recently become salt sensitive - makes my blood pressure go up. Crazy, sodium is in everything!.

Me too! We have been using unsalted beef broth for our crock pot recipes and love it.
