water filter???

If you have used a drinking water filter in your trailer, please share your experience (good or bad) and either recommend, or pan specific models.

Please describe stuff like:
- how effective it is in removing tastes and odors,
- where the unit is installed (under sink, on faucet or outside the trailer),
- ease of installation and daily use, and
- the capacity of the filter before needing to be replaced.

I use the cartridge style outside at the connection point, normally good for 90 days. It removes most of the sediment and foul taste and it has a charcoal filter for taste. I figure it is ok for washing dishes and coffee machine since the hot water should kill any bad stuff and toilet use. I still bring water from home for the dogs, their tastes are more sensitive than mine!!!

I added a separate faucet for filtered water at the sink because I wanted to be able to filter drinking & coffee (well, that's drinking, too) water that had been stored for a long time in the tank.

The original faucet proved to be too low for filling my coffee pot so one of this year's projects was to replace it with a higher one. (a photo of both are towards the bottom of this page.)

As to the filter, I described the problems on the same page - I ended up with a refrigerator water filter. It works well, removing bad tastes.

The wife and I have gotten rather fussy about our water since we got a reverse osmosis filter on our home sink. Has anybody tried to install an R/O filter in a trailer? How did it work in combination with the on-demand pump?

I have the same RO systems at home and am just as fussy but have not figured out to deal with the lag between trailering and storage. The hookup is easy but these systems don;t want to be unused for log periods of time...to enable the colonization of bugs we don't want...

The other problem with a R/O filter is the waste water, at least if you dry camp.

I have used a whole-house style unit, sitting outside by the faucet and just connected in-line with a short extra piece of garden hose - I screwed hose fittings onto plastic pipe nipples screwed into the filter housing ports.

I didn't have any problems with it, other than a cracked plastic fitting (which I replaced with brass); however, I don't really know how much good it did, as I never compared water from the same source with and without the filter.

I also have not used it enough yet to have any idea of cartridge life, but these things go for months at home on my well water.

Doesn't escape ofer a water filter as an option?

Water filters are normally not an installed option, but more of an add on. Normally installed at the source or campground faucet, it protects your water lines coming into your unit. They are readily available at wallyworld and rv places.

Portable water filters work fine - I've used one - but many RVs do offer them built-in. The built-ins are usually found on the larger units, especially large fifth-wheels and diesel pusher Class A motorhomes; both of these styles have large basement compartments for this sort of equipment. I would be surprised to see a built-in water filter on a trailer the size of an Escape, of any brand, but they may be out there.

On my 21 and I believe on my 19 I cut the cold water line under the kitchen sink and installed a filter from Ace Hardware. That gives a better glass of water and a better cup of coffee.
Now, this morning it's time to start flushing the fresh system to flush out all of the clorox taste and smell. I didn't flush the system well enough years ago and Nancy did not enjoy the smell after her shower and washing her hair, it was just a party we were going to attend.

We use those for any water going into the freshwater tank and then a Pur pitcher/filter for drinking water. Water is very clean tasting then.

Lindy and I are low brow. We just use the 90 day water filter and drink whatever the locals drink We also drink the water straight from the fresh water tank. So far, we haven't had any problems or ever gotten ill.

I did get a couple of rubber caps for the fresh water hose at Camping World. Just to keep dirt etc. out of the hose end. But think of all the times I drank from the end of a garden hose when I was a kid!

Helps to screw the two ends of the hose together for storage.

at the time I got them, I was more worried about the mud at the campgrounds when we un-couple. but you are right, we could just screw them together and I hadn't thought of that.
