I hooked up my portable BBQ by removing the hose and regulator that came with it and replacing it with a hose from my local RV store. It is 15 ft long and includes the male propane quick connect fitting.

Have you found a problem with any heat transferring down the hose from the burner.?
Some times the regulator gets quite warm with the green bottle connected. I think this is designed in to keep the gas warm
enough to stop it from freezing. Thus the pressure is fairly constant.
