Live Cell Research Ad

I am thinking you might want to vet some of your advertisers. I was here at work on my lunch hour when the attached "Are You Ready" Live Cell Research ad at right showed up in the right sidebar.

Regards,

Matt

These ads are usually a reflection of what you have searched. I just turned off Adblock and got ads for heaters, metal buildings, trailer jacks, campgrounds and stoves. All stuff I searched for in the last short while.

I knew someone was going to pin this back on me.

Actually, this particular ad is for an anti-aging supplement, which is more a reflection on the anticipated site demographic than any particular user. You'll see a lot of ads here targeted to the demographic. If you've ever placed AdSense/Adwords ads you can choose sites or users based on a demographic, and the site owners can specific advertisers if they wish.

I am probably among the younger EscapeForum users.

Those Livecell folks are probably comparing the efficacy of various campaigns. The banner style ad and much more traditional picture of pill bottles. My offense in this case is not with the snakeoil but the barker.

I turned ad blocker off, and though now I see ads on the right column, including the bent-over computer girl, when reviewing forum pages for some reason my mouse manages to randomly activate a blank screen. The httm address reads "Ad..." something. Very irritating.

Never noticed, pretty much just ignore ads, but do notice some ads because they are driven by something I searched for.

It is "ads pubmatic.com" that vexes me. Dufus thing just opened itself again without me doing anything. How about it, in-charge web-people?

Firefox with Adblock Plus and FlashBlock. And I may have added a custom rule or two. I see no ads on this forum.

Yes I had Adblock running and it did a heck of a great job blocking ads. Removed it last week because it was over-blocking (?) slowing everything down too much for me.

These are random Google ads that are based on your browsing history, physical location and "other criteria" that Google does not specify.

Not all members see the same ads.

That is only partially correct. Advertisers can target a demographic, and publishers can block specific advertisers.

For Google Adwords advertisers:
Quote:
Reach people of specific demographics
With demographic targeting in AdWords, you can reach customers who are likely to be within the demographic groups that you choose. Demographic groups that you can choose from include:

age ("18-24," "25-34," "35-44," "45-54," "55-64," "65 or more," and "Unknown")
gender ("Female," "Male," and "Unknown")
parental status ("Parent," "Not a parent," and "Unknown")
For example, if your business caters to a specific set of customers within a particular age range, gender, or parental status, you may want to target your ads to this audience because they’re more likely to be interested in your products or services. Similarly, you can use demographic targeting in combination with other targeting options like affinity audiences or in-market audiences to reach a more narrow customer base.
For Google Adsense publishers:
Quote:
Block at the product level
Sign in to your AdSense account.
Go to the Allow & block ads tab.
In the sidebar, select your product. For example, select “Content” for AdSense for content.
In the horizontal bar across the top of the page, click the Advertiser URLs tab.
Enter URLs in the box provided, then click Block URLs.
Block ads from specific websites - the Google Help Center

There are also Hosts files available online you can download that redirect a lot of the AD domain names to 127.0.0.1 (your local computer) so instead of ads you get "page cannot be displayed" where the ad should be. Pretty crued method but does help somewhat. Be sure you set your antivirus to exclude scanning the file though as it will usually revert it back to the default.

That's an idea, but it's probably simpler to just block ads with the new IOS9 tools or desktop ad blockers.

I believe in supporting the site by buying from ads where I can, but if it can't be managed responsibly, I'll just shut them all off. It's definitely not worth getting fired over.

Regards,

Matt

I left the ads on until site design changes made the ads too intrusive, so I installed Adblock Plus in Chrome... and now I don't see any of the ads which pay for the site. Moral of the story: abuse your potential customers and you lose them entirely.

It's the same thing for television channels supported by commercials: a few minutes per hour I can just wait through, but put in 15 minutes per hour in 6 interruptions, and I'll only watch a recorded copy that allows me to jump past the commercials.

Aside from consuming much page space, my issue with excessive ads is stupid video which slows the page load on my rural mobile network connection to the point that the site is unusable.

Thumbs down OK, it's gotten out of hand.

It's a shame it is so easy for the administrators to create an Adsense block list.

Block at the product level
  1. Sign in to your AdSense account.
  2. Go to the Allow & block ads tab.
  3. In the sidebar, select your product. For example, select “Content” for AdSense for content.
  4. In the horizontal bar across the top of the page, click the Advertiser URLs tab.
  5. Enter URLs in the box provided, then click Block URLs.

Actually it wasn't the worst of their ads, but un/fortunately, since installing Adblocker Plus this morning, I can't share it with you because I have nothing but whitespace!
