I'm not having any issues, so I can't duplicate the problem Kate. I keep hearing one of my past IT guys whispering in my ear... when was the last time you re-booted your computer...

That's not new - I've been fighting it since last year.

Hint: open notepad, type out your post, cut and paste it into the forum.
If you are posting and the forum logs you out before you can complete the post, it will pop up a login screen - then when you log in, locks up requiring you to get out losing your post in the process.

Rebooting isn't the answer. I shut down and reboot multiple times each day. It has to be a timeout that is kicking in too quickly.

I can't even remember the last time I logged out of the forum, I only shut down at the end of the day and I'm here a whole lot more than some. I wonder why this affects some and not others? Browser? Operating System? I would imagine it's aggravating. Sorry.

I'm running Windows 10 pro and Chrome - would that have anything to do with it?

It only happens when I am posting. Sometimes it takes a couple of minutes to get the post typed out and the forum kicks in the inactivity timer while I am in the post window. It's that inactivity timer that gets me kicked out requiring a new login.

My guess is the forum software doesn't see activity just because characters are being typed. It opens a window for text entry, does not see the activity in the window, and then waits for the "save" to reset the activity timeout.

I've had no problems, no idea the last time I actually logged out. Running chrome on a Win 10 laptop. I do shutdown everyday.

Kate, what are you working on for a computer?

I too am using Windows 10, but Firefox. I may post more than you, but your posts are longer (and better) than mine.

I do agree, that using a text editor is best when preparing a long post. It allows the individual a chance to gather thoughts and spell check, if nothing else. AND, if the software dumps you out, you don't have to retype the whole post again. It's a kludge, but it works.

I assume you are checking the Remember Me box when logging in?

Chrome is having major issues for me over on FGRV so it may be following here as well. I can't currently post using Chrome on FGRV so something is going on with the forum software there, but haven't had the problem here yet.

No, but I'll try that - that may be the problem!

I'm on MacBook Air and Firefox. Haven't had the issue of being logged out by the site for years and years. Spell check occurs as I write. I don't log out or shut down.

About a year, year/half ago, some changes were made to the software, requiring that box to be checked for each log in, otherwise you would be timed out for inactivity. Checking the box solved the problem. Good Luck!

I might add, those who never log out are always ‘remembered’. I log out after each use, and check the box every time I log back in.....

I don't have problems on the forums, but I do "help desk" work over on FGRV, and that one frequently drops me for "inactivity" when I'm working on a response, or if I have to look up somebody on our admin page (open in a different tab/window). Aggravating for sure, since I'm quite the opposite of inactive and love (not) the interruptions. ("Remember me" isn't an option on the help desk login.)

Gremlins.

I read something about this in one of the seven Harry Potter books. Can’t remember which, I was a kid then. A 70 year old kid.

This is important. It looks like an option so that forum remembers your username for the next session, but you don't need that (your browser probably does that), and what it really does is stops the forum from logging you out based on a way-too-short timer.

Kate,
This has happened to be since I've been on this forum, some 4½ years now. What I do when the post-writing takes more than a few minutes is open a second window, access the forum (it will show me already logged in), and every few minutes access that window and click something to show activity. So, when I finally finish my post and submit, I'm still logged in, so it works.
A bit of a pain, I know, but it saves some grief. The other thing you can do is, before you post, highlight it all, and press "Ctrl" and "C" keys together to copy it all to your clipboard.
If you're logged out, just log back in, start your post, and press "Ctrl" "V" to paste what you previously wrote, without retyping it.

Tick the remember me box as you login and if you are still having trouble check your system settings regarding cookies. We use them to keep you logged in at page changes and to remember you when you return. If you have set your browser preferences to purge them as you leave the site or at page changes you may have to login each time you return.
