AZ registration and Title

We just received our packet from Escape with the VIN, import paperwork, declaration of build being USDOT standards and NHSTA compliant. The AZ officials tell us this trailer is a grey market trailer. Mostly, we have to have a Level II inspection which they say is just confirming that the VIN is the same on the trailer as the paperwork. When we read the definitions of grey market, we think all is well as it certifies it was built to US standards. We are struggling with the statement that the Registered Imported (RI) has to be licensed and has to present a bond letter. We are the RI. So what is the license and where do we get the bond letter? Anyone import an Escape directly to AZ that can share experiences?

AZ will issue us a 30 day paper plate to bring the trailer from BC to AZ. That part is good.

You're actually not the registered importer. Escape hires a company (a licensed and bonded import/export broker) that is. They export the trailer from Canada and import it to the US, and handle all the paperwork. For the purposes of this transaction, you are just the end customer - not the importer.

The documentation they refer to is provided to you when you receive the trailer on the US side of the border - whether that's in Sumas WA (you traveled and picked up) or in AZ (you had Escape ship the trailer).

If the AZ DMV office won't issue tags without it, I'd suggest using a contract office who may be less stringent (as was mentioned above), or just getting a temp tag and registering once you have the trailer back in AZ.

AZ MVD requires that the VIN be verified by them. When we bought they would not issue anything except a 3-day, valid in AZ only, temporary tag. We tried 2 contract offices, AAA and another one, both hemmed and hawed and said they could not do it. If you can find an office that will register it, go for it. If you can get a 30 day tag, go for it.

We made paper tag that gave the VIN, date of purchase, home address, and said it was newly purchased and in transit to AZ. No one stopped us on the way home. We got a temporary 3-day tag, took it to an MVD office with inspection (Bell Road, Surprise, AZ) and paid lots of taxes.

Same experience here. VIN inspection was required so we couldn't do registration until we got the trailer home. We just had all the ETI and Border paperwork in the trailer if stopped, but no one bothered us on it.
Process was pretty easy for inspection and tag once here. The won't make it too difficult as they want their sales taxes....

Thanks for all the info. Prescott DMV tells us they will issue us 30 day tags about 10 days before we leave for BC. Well, that was Thurs, we hope they follow through in Sept. We will try the contract DMV, as level II inspection in Prescott is Tues only. And the contract guys apparently can read the VIN.

If one uses the contract DMV are they able is issue plates that same day? Once we arrive back in AZ, we have to immediately leave for FL. Maybe, 2-3 days in AZ is all the time we have available.

Provided you have all the required paperwork then yes, I would think it's same day. Walk in with a bag of money, walk out with plates.
