There's probably alot of truth in this. The thing to keep in mind is that it's another country. They have every right to run it as they see fit. Just as I would not attempt to bring US law and start demanding my 'rights' in Germany or France or the UK, I should not attempt it in Canada either. If that's unacceptable, I could always stay home.

We'll be heading to Chilliwack to visit the ETI factory next month, driving our truck with Texas plates and I have a concealed carry permit. Absolutely will not be carrying any firearms, will have bear spray for hiking we'll do during the trip. I'll report back on how our border crossing experience goes.
Question - we are bringing a roll of fabric for the trailer, will we need to declare that, have an invoice to prove the cost, and pay an import duty on it?

I stand to be corrected but I think US bear spray has twice the active ingredient than is allowed in Canada. Just keep this in mind. They may just be letting this slip at the border for visitors. If a Canadian was trying to bring in US bear spray I am sure that would not be allowed.

Ours is pretty old and about due for replacement anyway, so if they take it I can live with that.

You'll be asked about it, just as I and others were. They'll also ask if you brought them on the trip and left them on the US side, and if so, where. There is zero issue with the Canadian officials as long as you're truthful. In my experience they are a very professional bunch.

To be super blunt about the situation, the problem is mostly that a lot of folks lie about having firearms with them. I know enough folks that do this to know it's true. It's an ignorant thing to do when there is a legal hassle free way to bring firearms into Canada. Yes, our handgun rules are much more restrictive and they're probably better left in a storage locker before the border. But your favorite shotgun, no problem.
I wondered about the effect on crossing once it was on your profile that you previously legally carried firearms across the border. But I've had an ATF permit for quite awhile now and my average crossing time this year is about 3 seconds and I've never been asked the firearm question going either way. Love my nexus card.

Be aware that you may not be able to cross the U.S. / Canada border with some brands of bear spray. Canadian Customs will allow the importations of USEPA-approved bear spray into Canada. Specifications state that the bear spray must have USEPA on the label. American manufactured bear deterrent cannot be sold in Canada. Many manufacturers make spray for the Canadian market.
The can must be 9 ounces or larger and clearly marked as a bear deterrent. The can must have the USDA repellent registration.
If you are asked if you have bear spray or mace specifically state that you have bear spray. The agent may want to see the container.

This a ‘novel’ and very refreshing approach, Robert. Not heard often here in the SF Bay Area.
Salute’.

we took in a can we bought at Yellowstone and it went through customs just fine. But they did make sure it said"bear Spray" on the can.
we had Texas license and they did ask us if we were sure we didn't have guns or ammunition.:

When we recently crossed the boarder we were asked if we had weapons or mace (which is illegal in Canada) and I told them I had bear spray (which is legal). I always get asked about guns and tell them the same thing, they are locked in my gun safe at home. I know you can take some guns though Canada to go hunting in other parts of Alaska where we live, but I have not personally done that.
