$123,000 under your mattress 20 years ago would be worth $65,000 in today's dollars after factoring in inflation.

If you instead bought Berkshire Hathaway stock (A or B shares) back then it would be worth about $550,000 today.

Using the Bank of Canada Inflation Calculator I came out way better, having that mattress money worth $66,563.12.

Okay, not a lot better, and that investment would have been much, much, nicer.

Currency would be worthless to stash. What if one cached 123k in Gold Bullion in their wall 20 years ago.

The old Bohemies used to bury a coffeecan or fruit jar full of dimes somewhere in the farm yard. Sometimes the location died with the saver. A guy I graduated with from Iowa State found one of these caches with a metal detector a few years ago. He was and still is an artifact hunting nut . Coins, arrowheads, rings on beaches you name it, Leo would look for it.

Old Half Scots half Krauts did the same. Grandpa lost everything when the bank failed including the farm he had purchased. Which forced him to move his wife and baby daughter into his Mothers house until he could get back on his feet. After that he only kept enough money in the bank to cover a check. When he passed they found money hidden all over the house and hen house. Who knows how much was hidden in mason jars around the property.

This thread reminds me of an incident at Quartzite,Az where thousands of campers congregate. Those with artistic talent try to sell their handiwork. At one site there were oil paintings of various campers, Airstreams, SOB's and several fiberglass units. The Scamps and Casitas were $20 each. The Escapes and Bolers were $25 each. I asked why the $5 price difference between the Escape and the Scamp portraits and was told "the more expensive ones are the imported models".........

It's not a joke when it is true. At the Quartzsite gathering, Greg's co-host Earl, was selling Oliver buttons for more than the others branded buttons, as they obviously could afford it.

Trust me, he did a bang up job on them, many would call it art.

Actually the joke was about two paintings, one with american cheese and one with swiss cheese and when the artist was asked why there was a price difference between the two paintings, he replied it was due to imports always cost more.

We honestly didn’t think they’d buy them unless they cost more than the others.
Earl does make some killer trailer brand buttons.

We didn't buy one but just so everyone is in on the little joke, I'll repost this on the Oliver forum for you.

Went to my bank today to order up some Canadian money for our annual fishing trip .
Had to pay 80 cents US for $1 Canadian plus an $8 fee
The guy at our local bank says the Canadian dollar is on the rise and we may see the rate go to 85 cents US to $1 Canadian by Labor Day .

Could be, or could go the other way. It was down to 77 cents CDN to 1 USD earlier in the week. Been hanging around 78 cents CDN for several weeks now.

Trump pulls out of Iran deal, oil prices go up, Canadian dollar goes up.
Oil predicted to go to $100 / barrel and then drop back to $85 - $90.

Of course our dollar was bound to appreciate against the US$ just because early last week I had to buy a bunch of US$ to buy our new-to-us Escape. At least with the $ up I paid about $100 less than I figured for our federal tax today when I brought it into Canada.

I listened to an oil industry analyst predict that if the US pulled out of the Iran accords that US gas prices would jump 25 cents to 50 cents per gallon . His prediction was fairly accurate for us . The gas in our area jumped from $2.56 / gallon to $2.86 / gallon in a period of 2 days

Wallace’s Farmer

Hi Glenn
Where to start? Hmmmm. Iowa is the number one soy bean producing state in the Union. China buys a huge percentage of the beans grown in Iowa. Long time Iowa Governor Branstad is appointed ambassador to China. Tariff is imposed and China can buy beans cheaper from Brazil so they stop buying Iowa beans. Wallace’s farmer magazine keeps its finger on the pulse of farmers and crop marketing especially in the upper Midwest. 93 of Iowa’s 99 counties voted for President Trump. This would indicate that they are in agreement with his policies and have adequate funds to continue making payments on $300,000 combines and $11,000 an acre land. Or do they? Latest Wallace’s Farmer Cover gives pause. Be careful what you wish for.

Another huge tariff on newsprint was recently introduced. Sixty per cent of newsprint in US comes from Canada. Plan was that investors would build new newsprint plants, and that would create jobs, but that didn't happen. So, a Florida newspaper cut fifty jobs to offset the increased price of paper.
Funny how those things happen.
