Help/Ideas wanted for snag w/ title&registration N.J.

We registered ours last month in Venice, Sarasota county. Counting the wait in line we spent about 1/2 hour there.

Got the paperwork from Escape and headed to DOT in Madison, Wi.
They needed the certificate of origen , VIN and bill of sale. I filled out the title and registration form and gave the the American $ value payed the sales tax and other fees. $1750 later and 30 minutes I walked out with plates that I will be taking to Sumas in 6 weeks.

I agree with Ron. I called all over the State of Alaska and got the same response ...." No! ... we have to visually inspect your trailer" .... well being (I have been told before) a little stubborn, I asked to see the regulation. The clerk stuck her chin out at me ... (ok lets see who is more stubborn) ... well she looked at her screen .... typed some more .... then again ... called someone... called someone else .... got a call back .... then said "That will be $54.00. .... I couldn't write my check fast enough. [There is no state sale tax in Alaska] Seems they couldn't find the law and had nothing to show me .. hence I got my plates and tag. Another weird thing .... my plates and registration cost me $54.00 per year but if I registered my trailer as a commercial trailer (as in 'Office') then it is $54.00 for as long as I own the trailer ( one time charge). Really?? Yep!

I'd suggest you ask to see the law if you run into a wall. I think Connecticut will register you regardless of your home address ... without an inspection. Someone out there please check me on this.

Wow reading this in 2013 didn't go this easy for us . Took us almost 5 months before we were registered. The funny part we were given the plates and told we couldn't install them until trailer was registered, we put plates on . We had paid all fees and they had all our papers but for some reason everything went to Sacramento . We paid almost 2500. In taxes . We had to drove home with no plates , but had trailer insured . It was a nightmare for us . Pat

Never thought to see their regulation . Had to bring trailer to them after we got home . It was a crazy experience. Pat

We live in Collier county .we registered the trailer after ETI sent us the paperwork paid the reg fee and sales tax 6% and then got our plates .We had the trailer delivered to Chicago area and put plates on and made a mini vacation coming home . We did not have to show the trailer to anyone since trailer was new .I think a used trailer might be different ? Jim

Maybe. For us there weren't many Escapes in California at the time . It was new for them . After we got home it was required to show them the trailer and for them to check vin number on paper and trailer . We went to 3 dmv's , they were just very confused on how to register a new Canadian trailer in our state . But they sure know how to take your money , but giving you your registration had them really confused . Pat

When I went to register our trailer, the first thing the DMV employee wanted me to do was to convert every option on the build sheet to US dollars. I can assure you this got things started off on the wrong foot. Loren
