I did something slightly different to hedge the exchange rate. At my favorite brokerage, I didn't do anything with actual Canadian dollars, but I did buy Canadian bonds mutual fund with US dollars. The goal was that if the exchange rate varied, I was protected and I made some yield off the bonds at the same time. When I bought a trailer, I sold the mutual fund shares and used the US dollars I got from that to buy the trailer. One additional risk with this method (that was acceptable to me) involved interest rate differentials. I did this a while back when the exchange rate was near its most favorable and it worked out well for me. YMMV.

This is an old thread, but I didn't want to start a new one with the same topic.

Just read, the Fed is going to cut the interest rate to zero. IF you are a serious Escape trailer buyer, keep an eye on the exchange rate. Right now it's approx. 72 cents to 1 USD. It may drop further starting tomorrow.

Good timing Donna. I was just looking at that exchange rate at .72 and thinking that if I had a trailer on order I'd probably just go ahead and pay it all off at that rate. I thought it was amazing when we got our 21 at .75. When we bought our 17B in 2010 it was just about 1 to 1.

I was under the impression that Escape now "sets" the USD base price, as well as their options pricing, just as they do the CAD prices. They ask you to choose your currency on their website when you go to "build your Escape". In such a case, I don't see alot of benefit for US buyers if the exchange rate falls. Perhaps I don't understand how they're actually doing it. I'm merely assuming based on what their website shows.

Robert - you are most likely correct. I haven't kept up in that and went to look and see a US$ price and a C$ price. Looks to be around .80 on the base 21 pricing. I wonder if the US price varies with the exchange rate?

I have no idea Eric, but if I were guessing, I'd say no. Otherwise, there would not be much point in posting the USD prices - since they would change daily.

If you are in the US and can buy Canadian dollars at 72 cents, could you not then price your trailer in CAD and pay in CAD with those cheaper dollars?

But if you exchange USD for CAD and pay in CAD wouldn't it be better because you're getting more CAD for US dollars?

The listed price for a 5.0TA is
$29,995 USD
$37,495 CAD

But if I pay in CAD, at 72cent it would cost me 27068.39 USD

Yes, I suppose you could always pay in CAD. You just wouldn't be able to do it the way we used to, where you send USD and they do the conversion upon deposit.

So, a 5.0TA for example, loaded with 10 grand in options, would be around 33K US. Hmmm.

I used XE exchange when I bought my 5.0 a year ago. What I liked about them is you can set a transaction target. The way it works is I would send them $9K US and say execute the transaction when the exchange rate = X. Once the rate hit my target, the transaction would go through and they would send Canadian funds to Escape. I did this several times and ended up with an overall effective rate of 74.5 via 4 transactions.

Do a quick search for "TransferWise" or "XE" to read recent posts showing how some of us have saved several hundreds or a few thousand dollars by using these currency transfer services to convert our US dollars to Canadian dollars and then using those Canadian dollars to pay for our trailers.

Many years ago when the exchange rate was one to one, I knew Amerians living close to the border who opened Canadian bank accounts and used whichever currency was favorable when shopping over the border. I'm guessing some Canadians did the same.
