I insure home and vehicles with State Farm. In 2012 State Farm started giving a discount for recreational trailers if the sides and roof are "constructed from qualifying non-metal materials." I don't know if State Farm was a leader or was following the lead of other insurance companies. The discount applies to the Physical Damage Coverage premium and amounted to about 20% on my 2008 Scamp.

When I recently insured the new Escape 21 the agent indicated that the discount was quite a bit more than 20%. The now common lightweight trailers made with metal frames and laminated foam must be a lot more expensive to repair than fiberglass. It might be profitable for Escape owners to make sure their insurance agent knows that their trailers are made of fiberglass.

Good to know, I just contacted my State Farm and according to their underwriters this discount applies to high hail storm areas, of which Pennsylvania is not!! But this maybe helpful to those who are located in such areas.

Common RV trailers "made with metal frames and laminated foam" can have outer layers of various material, including fiberglass sheet. I wouldn't be surprised if fiberglass-clad conventional trailers count as having "qualifying non-metal materials", too.

Good news for Escape owners, anyway.

Any suggestions? Things to look for?

Just insured my 16` scamp for $216.00 a year. $17,500.00 + $2000.00 for items. Through Nationwide Ins. You have a higher value so it is about right. Carl

We went through Good Sam - they use Progressive. With full replacement cost coverage and internal content coverage ours was about the same as you mentioned -- $40 per month.

I would think any RV policy from a reputable carrier is fine. I wanted to make sure we could get the trailer replaced with a new one comparably equipped, and also I wanted the internal contents covered. If something were to happen to the trailer, They will calculate the coverage by going to Escape and asking them for a quote on a brand new one with the same options list. Whatever they quote would be the payout, plus the value of internal contents we declare.

We insured our 21 with National General Ins (through Good Sam). Cost last summer was $594 per year. Deductibles are $1000 each for collision and comprehensive. As newbies we took the path of least resistance and may well be overpaying. There's a Harley-riding CPA who lives about 30 miles North of us who can probably advise better. Good luck.

Very true Glenn. In our case, the rate was lower because we plan to store the trailer in a bonded storage yard instead of at our home.

Actually our insurance agent said to go to Progessive or like because State Farm our vehicle coverage for over 30 years even for a new trailer would not give you replacement coverage if something were to happen . They will give you this coverage for the first 5 years with a lower premium every year . You will get a new trailer whatever they cost at that time with what you had . After that will see . We are paying about 35 a month with deductibles of 250 this year . It did go done as promised .

Yep, we did shop around. The coverage limits on the Good Sam/Progressive policy were hard to beat.

I have 2 trucks and 2 motorcycles insured through Progressive. Presumably, I get a discount of some sort. I paid $385/year for replacement cost insurance and faxed the bill of sale to them.

I had to stop in my local State Farm office on another matter so I checked on the insurance for the new 21. They quoted me $470 for a year with $35.000 of coverage and a $1000 deductible. I felt this was a little high. They said there is a discount for a non metal surfaced trailer but the main gal to handle trailers was out so they didn't know. They could care less where the trailer is stored. Also, no discount on the trailer for having other vehicles insured with them. I guess I will have to do some shopping around as I have been meaning to put the whole works out for bids. Loren

We also have State Farm . My agent said to check out Progressive Ins . Which we did if your trailer is new they cover you for complete replacement for 5 years with your rates going down yearly . We are on second year full coverage 250 deductible for 318 . It went down about 5% . We still keep other vechicles with State Farm . State Farm did not have this deal for trailer ,said my agent , been with her for long time . Pat

I would have liked to go with my current Auto Insurance provider, but they don't insure RVs. So, we went with Good Sam/Progressive. It was 46 a month with full replacement coverage and a 500 deductible, so although I'm not that thrilled with the company, I'm happy with the coverage.

I find the insurance threads akin to the "can I tow" threads. Lots of partial information that leads nowhere in the end.
Before posting what you pay, you need to post exactly what your coverage is.
"Full coverage" with a $20,000 deductible (for instance ) is no bargain, no matter how cheap.
My insurance includes trip interruption ( pays for hotels etc ), covers $5,000 in personal effects and is guaranteed replacement with a low deductible.
Should also note that how much you pay may also be dependent on your credit rating and where you live.

Mine is full replacement of similar new, $500 deductible, It also covers roadside service and theft of the trailer and/or the contents.
