Actually it's $1.20 to mail a one ounce letter to Canada from the US.

And then you have the worry of it getting lost in the mail, getting torn by the postage handling systems (and the check falling out and getting cashed by someone else) and/or taking it's sweet time getting there. With the US postal system closing many of their processing centers, it's taking longer for mail to get somewhere, even across town.

So, for 45 bucks, it could just be worth it in terms of peace of mind and security.

on my first Escape my first mail payment took 2 weeks because I only put one stamp on the envelope. My next payment, via wire took one week. My final payment via mail and proper postage took 4 days.
My second Escape was all done via mail, so 6 payments @$45 each is worth almost the cost of gas one way to pick up your trailer.

My bank (CIBC) has recently increased the maximum $ amounts for making e-transfers, which would now make it more feasible to use this method for purchasing an Escape. The new limits are:

  • Maximum for a 1-day period: $3,000
  • Maximum for a 7-day period: $10,000
  • Maximum for 30-day period: $30,000
I have used e-transfers in the past for many other purposes, and they are simple to use and work quite well. Don't know if there are any limitations for cross-border transfers, but would definitely work for Canadians purchasing from Escape.

We just used XE.com and selected a free mailed draft to ETI. Once your account is setup you can make them an offer or accept their offer. Once the offer is accepted either way you know the rate your getting because you negotiated it up front. They then draft the money out of your bank, convert to CA$$ at the accepted offer rate and mail the draft to ETI. All free, and the drafts got to ETI in about 3-5 days after accepting the offer. Simple, free, and you know up-front what you're getting. They have a 24 hr 800 number, great service and will help you build everything if needed.

Looks like the Exchange rate took a major drop. 1 USD = 1.3233 CAD 1 CAD = 0.7557 USD

A 25 percent discount on most things we Americans buy is usually enough to cause a stampede to the sellers door. The rate is sliding up and not "ever so slowly" so if it were me, I'd be paying forward on what I could, before it goes higher. And I'd still feel pretty darn good.

We used XE for at least our first trailer, and I think our second one. It worked just fine. No problems

I had my bank wire funds in Canadian money to ETI care of Citizens Bank,Vancouver BC- I thought. When I received the e-mail from Tammy, she told me my bank had wired US $. I was shocked to find out that Citizens Bank had credited my a better rate (.76) than my bank (RABOBANK), which had the daily rate ($.77). The wire only cost me $5. I had a Vanguard FXC account in Canadian money, but they wouldn't wire Canadian to Citizens Bank. Not a bad deal after all, even though I thought I would be on the losing end.
