Yes, I was thinking that the gray is the limiter but in fact it is the black from what most have said. And for most of us, that is 14. And on top of that, an incorrect reading is often the case.

I emptied my black a few weeks ago and used the wand to wash it down. The monitor, when I was finished, read "empty".
Now, after sitting in my driveway for weeks, it is reading 2/3 full.
But, I've accepted that that is just the way it is.
Sorry to get philosophical, but open the trap and shine a flashlight down the hole for true enlightenment.

The 5-gallon containers are the source of extra fresh water, but where does the waste from dishwashing go? If that is dumped directly somewhere in the campground, not in the trailer, then I get why your black tank is full first.

This is a challenge for RV designers - they have no way to know how every owner will use the facilities.

It is probably easier to build in lots of tank capacity in underfloor fresh and gray tanks than in the black tank, which is on top of the floor and therefore under the toilet and in the bottom of any adjacent cabinet. Also, black tanks don't empty well if they are too long, so there are limits to extending the black tank.

At least I see why Reace may have gone for such a large black tank on the most recent models: earlier owners were telling him that the black tank size was limiting to them. I can see how a large tank could extend under the bed in an Escape 21', but I'm surprised by the large size in an Escape 5.0TA with only a small cabinet beside the bath... did the black tank move to under the floor? I didn't look at that area on the demo 21', and there was no 5.0TA built the last time I went through Chilliwack.

I was serious about capacity being largely determined by what fits. In Escapes, the fresh water tank is typically (not all models are quite the same) up in the stepped-up part at the rear of the trailer, while the gray waste tank is under the main floor area. If the positions of the two were reversed (which would be better for trailer balance) the shower would need a drain pump to move wastewater up to the gray tank.

Brian, best I can tell the there is room for no bigger then a 1' high x 2' wide, 3' long tank. At 7.5 gallons per cu' it could be up to 45 gallons. Goes back from a few inches in front of the step, then under all 3 steps. The bath is 24" wide and the toilet is 1' above the trailer floor. This is just me measuring the space it could occupy, I have no idea what else is in there as it can't be seen.

For us in our 19 the fresh tank and grey tank were always the limiters. The fresh tank is easy to deal with . One way or another fresh water can ushually be sourced. So it was always the grey tank that had to be rationed. But for us that most mostly due to
Showers . My wife's logic is that we bought a trailer to have our own bathroom so she is going to use it shower and all . Where as I don't mind using campground showers if they are available and clean. So the bigger tanks in the 21 will

Shower use seems to determine which tank fills first. I know that it larger RV's it is almost always the grey tank that fills first, but with a wet bath most Escape owners are more conservative on their shower taking.

Since most trailer users tend to camp with hookups, I suspect manufacturers do their best to put in the largest tanks that will fit & can be supported.

I had a brain lock recently. Everyone refers to it as the black tank. So why is the black tank labeled a "holding" tank? Don't they know some of us just can't hold it?

(Especially after coffee.)

I am actually surprised that there isn't one of those horrendously annoying little decal labels to tell me that "holding" tank is the black tank . Man I hate all those stupid little labels everywhere.

I had to use my label maker mark my monitor "Grey" and "Black" because they were marked "1" and "2" and I could never remember which was which.
