International Falls MN set a record of -36F. Not the coldest it's ever been there, but the coldest for Dec 27th.

I have to ask: how exactly does a thermometer exaggerate? You can read bias into anything I guess. Even a weather report.

We were at -30°C yesterday morning too. -20°C this morning, but not warming up at all. We look to be hovering between -18 to -31°C for the rest of the week.
Just makes one appreciate moderate temps better.
Those temps Jon quoted are looking mighty wonderful.

I am sure you have similar coping methods to get through the 11 months of Florida's summer.

Go back to school and learn how to add. 5 or 5-1/2 is not the same as 11. Or perhaps you are dealing in one of those metric measurements. Florida has 7 to 7-1/2 months when the weather is similar to the summer weather I grew up experiencing in Nee England.

Doing some accidental cold-weather camping this week visiting Oklahoma for the holidays. I poured some antifreeze down the gray and black tanks and am leaving cabinets open and toggling the water heater on periodically. So far so good down to 15F last night, though we're burning through a tank of propane every four days or so.

We are in our fourth day of snow and ice in Portland, Oregon. I'm sure that's at least two weeks long....

It's been way out of whack so far this winter, in many parts of the country. We're 25 below normal, headed for 50 below normal in a couple days. I remember a December visit to Portland a few years ago that was just beautiful with temps in the 50s and 60s.

It doesn't f you live in an area where the weather never changes.
( Remember Bill Murray in Groundhogs Day)
Up here weather is a big deal and the 4 local major TV stations
( CBS , NBC ,ABC ,FOX ) compete for weather ratings.
The same days forecast, wind chill , snow fall , low temperatures high temperature .etc. can vary greatly
We had 25 below on our home thermometer this morning , The weather bureau said it was 23 below , one TV station said we had 16 below and another TV station said we had 28 below.
A certain local TV station has a propensity to exaggerate / sensationalise the numbers to get ratings ( When your #4 you try harder ) and I will let it go at that..
Just as some TV networks twist the news , some TV stations twist the weather.

Cold weather
It’s pretty cool down here in our country, a few degrees below zero this morning. Worked well to be able to just set stuff outside while I defrosted my upright freezer. I don’t get into low or high temperature peeing contests. I am just glad a friend of mine has an acetylene torch rig so he can put my brass monkey back together if I forget to bring him in.😜

Down here we have 2 traffic seasons, normal and snowbird. Snowbird is when everyone comes down here to escape the cold so the roads are packed and the road crews start doing road work.
Normal is quieter, not as many people and no road work.

Got my schoolin' just south of Erie, PA. Most of us were either from Pittsburgh or NJ. We called it "Dreary Erie, the mistake on the lake." Them poor shovelin' souls.

I could take those temps, Jim. But when I think about adding wind to the equation, I really start to shiver. It’s not so much the cold itself, it’s the cold that penetrates deep into your bones. I sometimes miss the pristine appearance of a landscape covered with newly fallen snow (unless that pristine landscape is the driveway and the newly fallen snow must be relocated!).
I had a dog when I lived in New England that loved to “play” in the snow. I’m guessing Jasper also does.
