Have any of you ever refilled those small green propane cylinders from a 20 lb tank?

There are several videos on YouTube demonstrating how easy it is, and claiming that there is a substantial saving to be had by reusing those tanks.
Rather than clutter up the Curious About Propane Refilling thread I've started a new thread, Refillable 1 lb Propane Bottles.

Enjoy,

Perry

My confession

I have refilled 1 lb disposables for my propane torch and Mr. Buddy. Harbor Freight sells an adapter to do so. Apparently, it can be an unsafe maneuver. Besides the flammable gas hazard, there may be other issues. Legal to do so where I live, but by law I can't cross state lines with refilled tanks. I'd hate to get pulled over and busted for only that!

There is a safer set-up, with a tank and gear designed and sold for this.

Available at big box and other stores.

The 1 pounders are pricey if you burn thru them.

What's the new thread about?
What about the responses already posted?

Geez..................... it's about filling green propane tanks, and there is currently only two responses. You choice if you want to repost in the other thread, but why clutter this thread up. It happens too much here. On the forum I moderate I would move the few existing posts into the new thread.

Enjoy,

Perry

Got it now, but when I read you were starting a new thread, I was reading the old one.

Here, at least where I usually get propane, they do both every time as it is legally required. They need to know the tank weight to determine the total weight with 20 lbs (or whatever size the tank is) of propane added.

My guess is that the Costco here does it every time, too... but no one else does. What is legally required is meaningless if there is no enforcement... and clearly there is no effective enforcement.

The tare weight weight is indeed needed, and most places just assume 18 pounds for any 20 pound capacity tank. I think it would be interesting to take two 20-pound steel tanks with half-pound different tare weights into a station and see if they adjust the scale between them.

I was curious, so I checked my tanks' tare weights. The two that came on our 2015 Escape: 16.6 and 17.0 lbs.
Our others are: 17.0, 18.0, and 19.6 lbs.
The Valero station where I get them filled checks expiration dates, then fills the tanks. They charge by the total gallons on the meter after filling whatever tanks I bring.
