Maybe a 2-ft length or two, of re-bar sharpened at one end, bent to an "L" at the other, and take 'em down when wind is expected.

I've used re-bar in place of tent type pegs for rocky ground. I used 1/2" re-bar with one end cut at 45* and welded an eye on the side near the top. Even on rocky stuff they ~will~ go in. Maybe not perfectly but I just keep smacking them until they find a way around the rock or whatever. Crude but good for tough ground.

I've made my own tent pegs from large spikes from Rona and poly rope.

It pretty much is a noose, tied around a spike.

Now that is one beautifully crafted knot! You must be a mariner.
