Horst probes for the fresh water tank
Horst probes come in black and gray tank versions. What about the fresh water tank? I've heard some people use the gray tank probes in the fresh water tank. Is there any benefit in doing so, or are the fresh water sensors always correct given the lack of sludge in that tank?

If your fresh water tank is getting dirty enough to need Horst probes, I would consider not drinking it.

on the 17b the fresh water tank is somewhat translucent and really doesn't need sensors

My fresh water reads 2/3 full for the past year, no matter how much water is spurting out the fill inlet.

Hi: gbaglo... 2/3 full is also 1/3 empty!!! Seems a popular level to be at. Alf

While the fresh water tank sensors should not get clogged, the wire can come disconnected, or a connection can go bad without coming apart.
While the fresh tank is translucent, it is also under the trailer, so having a remote display is certainly convenient, and with the optional underfloor insulation it is not visible.

I'll be getting the undercarriage foam, so this option will not be available to me. Great benefit for most people though, I understand.

Sounds to me like perhaps the top sensor is electrically disconnected. Hard to say if this situation would be improved if you had Horst probes. Does it consistently show the right values when the tank is less than 2/3 full?

Don't know. I've never come close to running out of water and I've never been confident in my visual check. I've checked the sensors visually and sprayed electrical contact cleaner on them. Didn't want to mess with them further than that.

After thinking a few minutes on it, it seems to me that Horst probes are designed to avoid creating phantom electrical connections, so they should help stop the tank from looking fuller than it really is. In your case the tank looks emptier than it really is, so that isn't something that I would expect Horst probes to help with.
Without foam or another type of protectant, that location looks susceptible to damage from road debris.
Sorry to hear about your probes not working. At least you are in good company given that a lot people seem to have trouble with probes.

Just do what my MIL used to do with her ATM card. She'd stick it in the machine and if $80 came out then she must have had some in there.
Turn the tap if water comes out then you still got some.....

Hi: gbaglo... It's that cool crisp glacier/mountain water. They should stick to brewing beer with it!!! Red Arrow Brewing Company | Duncan, BC Alf

Sure, horst probes may help you get the water level reading but you need to save water too. Just Google some of the sensors with good technology that you can access from your smartphone. Make sure you don't spend much.
