Good point. This would have alerted us to the bad ground on the extension cord. Since the unit does not allow power to the RV it would have forced us to find the problem. The portable surge unit that my father uses occasionally would have also alerted us via the LED's on the face, but I don't think it actually locks out power. You have to plug it in first and check incoming power status BEFORE you plug the trailer into the portable unit.

Wow, and phew! What an interesting thread. Glad my hot water is propane only. Confirms my rule of thumb: K.I.S.S.

There are similar trailers with electric-only water heaters, which are substantially simpler than propane-only, albeit not nearly as useful for many people. The right level of simplicity is the level that's right for you.

All electric? I haven't seen any plugs at Quartzsite yet, but I guess we could put a request in with BLM.

Good friends of ours used to own a 23' motorhome that had electric only water heater. Their whole unit relied on either being connected to the grid or running their genset. It was a pain travelling with them, as we had to give up lots of great campgrounds with no services at the site, in favour of full hookup sites. After having to run it at our land a few times, and catching grief from my brothers and friends, they went and bought a new 25' motorhome, and spec'd everything out so they could easily boondock with it, including 200W of solar charging. We like them even more now.
