Problem is they rate it 88 amp/h but don't indicate if that's the 5hr. rate, or 20 or what? Makes it hard to compare. Trojan is 105 AH at 20hr. rate and 85AH at 5hr. rate.
Given the price, it appears that you're looking at Canadian Tire's Group 27 AGM battery. The specs include:
Quote:
88 amp hours, 190 minute reserve capacity
"Reserve capacity" usually means the time that a 25-amp load can be maintained. That would be about 79 amp-hours over a 3-hour period. The 88 amp-hour rating would be over a longer period... but how long?

The corresponding Trojan is their 27-AGM. Comparing to the Trojan specs, the Canadian Tire battery is heavier (more lead), and has a greater reserve capacity... I suspect that the Canadian Tire 88 A-h rating is for a 5-hour rate; 20-hour rate would be likely be over 100 A-h if the ratings follow a similar pattern.

It looks like the Trojan you're using for comparison is the 27TMX. It has (in addition to the 85Ah@5hr and 105Ah@20hr) a reserve capacity of 175 min @25A. Again, it's lighter than the Canadian Tire unit... so again I suspect the Canadian Tire 88Ah rating is for 5 hour, and the 20 hour rating is likely over 105 Ah.

Brian,

You have correctly ID'd the batteries I was comparing. Also need to look at warranty. I'm an electrical short circuit, but I'm guessing the Canadian Tire offering is the better deal?
It's on sale now, but I'm hoping I can limp along for a bit. Maybe get a new battery next spring.

Have you looked at the vmaxtanks AGM batteries? They sell one with 125ah and 155ah. Better charge acceptance vs flooded.

Forgot about that. Looked at the Amazon.ca website and their choices are severely limited compared to the US site. I could ferry one up to ETI for you but it wouldn't be till March!

Thanks for the offer, but if I get a battery locally, I won't have to mail it back to source to claim warranty. I still live in hope that I can get another season out of this Trojan 27TMX. I should, for the price.

I'm going to leave it unplugged from shore power for a few days and monitor it. Then I'll disconnect a terminal after charging and monitor that.
Don't disconnect 'a' terminal, disconnect the negative terminal, especially if the battery was just charged, and more so if it is in a closed space.

Wear eye protection and, if you insist on disconnecting the positive terminal, ear protection as well.

Good Luck.

What is the reason for taking all these precautions ?. Is explosion a possibility when you disconnect a positive terminal after the battery is full charged? Thanks.

These may be available in Canada locally from Sears:
Sears.com (link to Sears Marine Deep Cycle Battery on sale).

I use a smaller version (size 34M) to power my electric trolling motor and have high praise for its easy charging, long life and foolproof maintenance, thanks to AGM construction.

If the twin 6V battery option was not available at ETI I would be considering a pair of these batteries in parallel. But at 75 pounds each, weight is a factor to consider since I can't lift much over 50 pounds.

A safety note: They don't give off external hydrogen gas in normal use.

If there is current flowing when you disconnect a terminal, you risk a spark between the cable connector and the terminal... and that is true with either terminal.

The advantage of disconnecting the negative terminal first is that there is no voltage difference between it and the trailer frame or other "grounded" things which you might accidentally touch with tools or your body: that means minimal shock/spark hazard. If the first one you disconnect is the positive side, and you touch it with a wrench, there is a risk of touching a grounded point with the other end of the wrench and getting a big spark due to the resulting short circuit.

When I was shopping batteries, Battery World at 1st and Boundary, Vancouver, was cheapest by far for what I was comparing (Trojans).

Perhaps a bit off topic Jamie, but if I hooked up 4 Trojan T-125's together, that'd give me some impressive amp hours, would it not? Only concern is the weight.

Searched "Sears Canada deep cycle battery" and found this. Note, Sears Canada is close to going under.

Lets see, 4 Trojan T-125's equal 6.4 KWh and 120 Kg.

Nope, not for me. I'm holding out for the mystical 5 KWh, 15 Kg lithium rechargeable for about $100 US.

Time to put this one to bed.
Used the voltmeter at a DC outlet and it was bouncing between 11.94 and 12.06. Tested a cell with the hydrometer and got 12.75 or better.
Applied a baking soda solution to the terminals and cleaned them to ensure contact.
Voltmeter now reads 12.61 ( that's after two days off shore power ).
Thanks to all.
Memo to self: any electrical issue; first check and clean contacts.

I saw the same issue: the Sears link is redirected for those of us in Canada to a generic entry page, rather than the intended battery page. Of course, the intent was to suggest a battery that might be available locally here, and store stock is often not the same as the online catalog... it might be worth checking (in person).

Ha-ha, that's the best case scenario, wrench welds its' self to metal object or blows a hole in adjacent sheet metal, scares the crap out of you. Yeah, really good reason why the negative gets disconnected first.

I'm not about to prove anybody wrong so I just disconnected the negative first ( and the trailer was off shore power. When I reconnected, negative first ), there was a small spark at the terminal.

You got a spark at the negative terminal when you connected it with the positive disconnected?
