Sink Drain Install Advice

I am replacing the factory acrylic sink with a shinny new stainless steel one. I remember reading a forum thread (which I can’t find now) debating the virtues of installing the drain assembly using plumber’s putty vs silicone. I remember reading that putty is not recommended for acrylic sinks, but I can’t remember if silicone should also be used with SS sinks. My plan was to use plumber’s putty, but wanted confirmation this before I start the project.

Plumber’s Putty or Silicone?

Thanks

Plumbers putty gets my vote. I reassembled ours (SS) which had a small drip and it has been problem free ever since.

I used PP when I replaced the drain several years ago on my SS. I did develop a leak there last year requiring tightening a bit.

With all the bouncing around these take it might not be a bad idea to drop ETI the question and see what they use when they install stainless.

I actually just went to our local RV dealer and he ordered the sink for me. It’s fairly small (roughly 13”x14”).

It’s getting more and more difficult, but I try to shop locally when I can. Having said that, Amazon is so darn convenient!

Hope this helps.

You are correct in that you should not use plumbers putting with acrylic, they usually say right on the sink. A good bead of good silicone works good, wiping away any excess just as you would do with plumber's putty.

I generally prefer plumber's putty for metal sinks, in fact just used it on two last week on a job. It does harden a bit in time though, and I would think even with proper tightening could likely fail in time. At least this is not a catastrophic thing.

However, there is nothing wrong with using silicone with less chance to fail in a bouncing trailer, it is just messier, but with a steel sink you could use acetone for a good clean up.

I replaced our sink with a stainless version, using a residential bar sink chrome-plated brass drain assembly with plumbers putty with a brass tailpiece. I had to cut the existing drain pipe and replace with a new glued black ABS p-trap system as the sink drain was in a slightly different location. No leaks in six months and the sink finally drains properly (fast).

If you're going through the work of replacing the sink, also consider replacing the trap with a HepvO.
