We're spending a few years traveling the south looking for somewhere to spend our winters.
Would like to spend a week or so checking out the area around Albq but know next to nothing about it. Could use some suggestions on what areas to see and where to stay. We'll be heading east from AZ late March, best guess is about the 22nd.
Not interested in the city itself, we're looking for quiet town near hiking, the more trails the better, as well as biking. We're not hard core mt bikers or road bikers. Deb has a hybrid and I have a toned down older mt bike. We prefer bike trails and dirt roads/paths. We're also not commercial campground folks, rural state parks and such are our norm. Don't care one way or the other about hookups. The less crowded the better. Any ideas?
Bob, Night time views going into Albq. from the West with all the lights is pretty spectacular.
Bosque Recreation trail is nice paved system. I parked at the Pueblo Montano trail head rode my bike over bridge and down along Rio Grande. Seems like it goes forever.
Cannot speak much about any RV parks that would be secluded in the area.
Sandia Peak Tram is cool.
Albuquerque balloon festival is site to behold. Tip, park away from the launch field and ride bike along water diversion channel. Takes you right to the back side of the launch field and it is free.
Consider very decent, convenient and cheap rv campground run by the Army Corps of Engineers, at Cochiti, NM. It's about 25 miles(?) north of ABQ on I-25. Hiking at nearby Jemez Mountains, half the distance to Santa Fe.

Looks like it doesn't open till late April, but thanks.
