Thanks to that Wells Gray family, I got a tent trailer in perfect condition because a co-worker's wife refused to ever go camping again. He stored it in a garage for ten years and finally sold it to me for $900. I offered $1,000 and he countered with $900.

Hey there's parts of LA I don't venture into unless I'm packing heat (yeah, legal, retired cop). LA County campgrounds for me? Probably not!

I'm with Ross, I da*n sure won't go to Mexico. Great memories of 30 years ago but no way now. What a shame too, it was truly a wonderful place to visit and to camp. I found someplace equally exotic and safe, Florida Keys 2017!

Maybe an urban myth but I had a Quartzsite local tell me of Mexican banditos surrounding rv's out in the desert, duct taping the occupants and heading south with the rv's! I know lots of you folks BLM camp out there and that's fine. Me? The more the merrier when it comes to rural dry camping down near the border!

A few years ago I spent a long night in a motel East LA Spent half of it figuring out where I'd dive to avoid the bullets if they started flying.

Local knowledge is good when it comes to staying out of trouble.

Yes - it has been news for years, because such events are so rare and because it is an unresolved case.

Nope, hadn't heard of that, but since it was so long ago it illustrates how rare these events are.

Exactly. We heard about the guys in the van because (although they were Australians) they came from Canada. We don't hear about other similar crimes because there is no connection to us.

For an illustration of this issue: here in Edmonton we don't hear about anyone being killed in Detroit; that certainly doesn't mean there is no such crime... there is - on average - almost a homicide a day in Detroit, more than half the number in the entire country of Canada. News reports are not useful measures of crime, anywhere.

Exactly. I'm not sure how much I would trust my collection of local knowledge to pick the right place to camp in Mexico. Perhaps I'm just naive, but I think any random campground in Canada is pretty safe, and the same is not true of Mexico.

That's why some of us who work for the City of Oxnard chose to live elsewhere. To be fair, many parts of Oxnard are OK, but then.....

(Reminds me of an afternoon, as an inspector on a jobsite, when the job super. and I quickly decided to move inside; shots fired about 1000 ft. away.)

Going to visit kids who lived near Navy base off Ventura Road , they told us to stay off some streets to get to them . At Christmas brought motor home there to sleep in (house small world war 2 house ) nights were scary shots , helicopters , ambulances, fire trucks . Couldn't wait to go home . Very busy nights there . Pat
