Just crossed today from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay with the FJ towing our 19'. Was very busy but we had reserved in advance. Was second in line to get on and off. Three of us plus vehicle and trailer cost $215 Cdn.

Well that's less than half what it would cost you for a hotel room in Vancouver.

And a bit more than the $57.50 US I'll be paying from Coupville to Port Townsend.

We paid $180 all in for Granville Island Hotel. There were more expensive hotels around, but I would stay there again of in Vancouver.

The point is that a couple hundred dollars to transport a vehicle and trailer and three passengers from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay - an hour and a half boat ride - is not unreasonable. It's a mini ocean cruise.

Sounds about right... three times as much money (CA$215 versus US$57.50 or CA$75) for a trip three times as long, and with three times as many people.

Ferries are not cheap to run, so it's worth planning to make the most of the trip.

Probably a better comparison is Horseshoe Bay to Bowen Island return. About the same distance as one way to Port Townsend. $130 Cdn. plus fuel surcharge vrs. $57.50 US.

If you need gluten free granola so bad that you would haul a trailer over to Bowen, you should pay. Or, you go as a foot passenger for a fraction of that, and walk off the tofu.

BC has a ferry called the "Tofu"?

...of course, we have only made the crossing one time, and I hope the locals get a break, but that ferry crossing from Coupville to Port Townsend was one one of the highlights of our return trip from Chilliwack. I highly recommend it and call it a bargain for the value of the adventure!

We like taking that ferry over to visit Olympic National Park!

One of the costs for getting to live on the Island!

We have started taking the trailer to Vancouver when we visit my Mom, in a senior's residence there, and stealth camping adjacent to the community park beside her residence. $102 extra each way for the trailer ($192 total). Way cheaper - and more convenient for us - than hotel.

We're traveling to US soon, and I compared three ways of getting off the Island -- BC Ferries $192Cdn, MV Coho Victoria to Port Angeles $177US/~$238Cdn, WashDot Sidney to Anacortes $179US/~$241Cdn (all three are comparable-length trips, although the Coho is very spartan compared to BC Ferries. On that basis, BC Ferries is a bargain.
