Question Boondocking Anza-Borrego Cali. area? or nearby?

Hi all

Looking to do some self contained camping away from the sad smoke of the Malibu fires…. soon.

I read that Rockhouse Trail Campsite - Borrego Springs, CA
https://www.campendium.com/rockhouse

is nice, quiet, and not too far from a town….

any other suggestions vaguely in the area?

Any good, quiet camping (no reservations needed) in Silverado area? Mt San Jacinto? San Bernadino National Forest?

A short trip, coming from Los Angeles, so semi-close to LA would be good. So less than 200 miles from LAX.

It can’t be a difficult road to get there… meaning it can’t be real “off road”.

Needs to be a fairly flat dirt road access. Escape 21' plus Acura MDX tug.

Thanks! :-)

I recommend Blair Valley, our favorite place to camp in Anza Borrego. It is on the left side of S2, about 7 miles south of the S2/78 junction. It is free, safe and a great spot for a base camp and there are a lot of historic native Indian campsites in the area with morteros and petroglyphs.

John, we camped at Rockhouse Trail in Anza-Borrego at the end of February and it’s very easy for a 21 (and bigger) to get in there. Close to Borrego Springs. Certainly we would recommend.

if you go the other direction about 200 miles, there's Montana de Oro State Park on the coast by Los Osos, near San Luis Obispo.

If you go out to Borrego, seek out a short trip to Fonts Point. Don't take your trailer but your vehicle will be fine. Seems like nothing but regular desert til you get to the end. amazing view of the badlands.

Fonts Point is a great spot. Also the palm canyon trail from the state park at Borrego Springs is worth a trip too. It’s an easy hike, with a neat oasis at the end.

Borrego Springs, a favorite place

We really like this little desert town. Matter of fact, we have visited there many times and we will be spending a couple of weeks there in January in the State Park Campground. ABDSP is unusual in that you can boondock anywhere in the park you wish to (unless the regs have recently changed). The Rockhouse Trail boondocking area is popular. There is an FMCA group that traditionally camps there over New Years so you will have some company. There is also another place a bit closer to Borrego Springs where there are always boondockers camped- the Y intersection where Henderson Canyon Rd comes into S22. Like others have said, Fonts Point is fun, especially on New Years Eve. Bring champagne and toast the setting sun on New Years Eve.

Borrego Springs.
Allan.
Agree, a nice little town, we alternate between the State Park and Henderson road at S22.
That little Y is called Peg Leg Smiths place.Named after a goldminer that had spent a lot of time in those hills.Peg Leg is boondocking six miles from town towards the Badlands. No service of any kind. The sun is free, but if the wind is starting to blow , time to move on.
